Hello all,

i'm just writing this post to get an answer.

I'm a computer programmer and i work like 12 to 16 hours a day and sometimes worked like 18 hours too.

i like my work and my financial condition is strong.

But from some last days , i could not able to enjoy time after i finish work, like i can't watch video on youtube or a movie on my computer or in theater because of guilt feeling, even i work for long hours i could not able satisfy myself with my work and felt guilt.

i don't talk with friends & relatives much because of this, also i don't attend any social event because of this, instead of attending social event i use that time for work.

So, i just wanna know, is it bad ? is it a mental illness or something ?

Any help will be appreciated, Thank you.

Hi coder, welcome to Psych Central. Sorry to hear you feel the zest has gone out of life.

My impression is that the biggest area that needs attention is the number of hours you are working. 16 hours a week times 5 days is 80 hours. times 7 is 112 hours. 18 hours would be 126 hours. there are only 168 hours in a week. A normal nights sleep is 7-8 hours for most people. times 7 is 50 hours.

Are you eating well rounded diet?

Money does not buy happiness many people say. Time is the most precious commodity we have.

Try a new routine, 12 hour days for 5-6 days. Take one day off a week. Try that and see. If you do this and sleep more (may take time to adjust) perhaps a zest for life will return.

If living on coffee, cut back so can go to sleep easier.

If after all this still problems come on and post again.

Thank you so much for reply,

Yes, i work on weekends too so you can count same hours for weekends too, and yes that is true that money can't buy happiness.

My eating schedule is not quite well too may be that's another reason, but i don't drink coffee or anything else to make me not to sleep, instead i listen loud music with headphones while working and good thing is that loud music not able to distract me from working, i enjoy working with headphones.

thank again for advice, i will try as you said.

Have a wonderful day!

guilt is not a sign of mental illness. it is a red flag for depression but there are many other signs involved in that as well. getting no pleasure out of activities you used to enjoy would be another sign. how are you sleeping? eating? feeling about yourself? you can find the becks depression inventory online if it is a concern. or maybe you have made work the sole focus of your identity and when you are away from it you feel guilty for not being there? welcome to psych central. you will find we have several forums where you can post about your concerns and receive feedback from other members. you will get a lot of support here. again, welcome

Hello There,

thank you so much for writing me back,

i admit that i'm not sleeping and eating well. and everytime i feel like voice in my head always saying to me like "Do your work , you can't stop here you lazy *****" no matter even if i'm tired or not , i always feel like that even after long working hours. You can easily compare that voice with madness of joker from Batman Dark Knight Movie.

i even got serious back and neck pain because of long hours work.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
