Wasn't sure which sub-forum to post this on.. Please move if necessary.

Does anyone notice themselves saying the wrong word when they are talking? I don't mean similar words.. like cup instead of bowl. Or sock instead of shoe. I mean a different word with a different meaning, but a word that sounds the same?

This morning, I was telling my son to have fun at the auction tonight, but it came out as "Have fun at the oxygen!"

It was bizarre and kind of upsetting. I have done similar things before, but it was more akin to not being able to find the right word or being distracted and saying the wrong word, wrong name, etc. Not like this.

I wonder if it could be stress. I am stressed to THE MAX lately - making changes to address this, but it will be slow going. I also have several mental health issues, but am not on any meds for the last year or so, so it isn't medication related.

I deal with anxiety, depression and OCD.

Diagnosed years ago with bipolar and ADD, although those two diagnoses might not be accurate.

I have also been having incredibly vivid, traumatizing dreams for the last few nights in a row which lead me to think it's stress.

Anyway.. thanks for sharing any insight or your own experiences with this!
Hugs from:

Yes I have had trouble with speech/finding the right word, for me it was a period of stress followed by depression. SSRI med helped a lot I'm happy to say - but for a while it was scary. I actually avoided speaking to people for a while except those closest, and was constantly apologising to them for my slip ups. I also made several errors such as getting on the wrong train, my mind was constantly struggling to focus.

Maybe chat to your doctor about it, see what they think. Even if they just reassure you it might be helpful.
Thanks for this!

Hello. I have the EXACT issue. I didn't think anyone else did this. I say different words that are similar in topic. Like I have said stuff that doesn't make sense. Like I mix names. One time, which is the only example I have, is when I said lock instead of hook because I was talking about in my locker there is a hook missing, but I said lock instead. Everyone was confused. I don't mean to do this. It just happens.

I am not sure if it's related to the dreams, because I do this whether or not I'm stressed. It's weird.

Social anxiety disorder, GAD, OCD, and panic attacks

Since, you don't the diagnoses written in your post where this also happens, then I guess is as good as mine....Correct yourself and slow down report to your treatment provider if ongoing all the time, track via your journal

I do this; and, there are times I am worse than others during the day.

I will lose words in the middle of conversation or else have difficulty thinking of what the correct word is to use in the first place.
Thanks for this!

I do think it is STRESS because I do that a lot...and mostly when I am severly stressed out.
