I'll try not to write a book here...

I switched jobs about two years ago because my old bosses were taking advantage of me by working extra hours with no pay.

Finally got fed up and got a job my cousin recommended. Great pay, decent benefits, etc. However this job is similar to being in an extremely abusive relationship. Call center work. I've been told to die, that I'm a dumb hick, asked to transfer because girls aren't smart enough and these are the NICER comments!

I've been out of work now almost 2 months. Every time I attempt to go back my POTs flares up and I pass out. I also become shaky, terrified, and feeling suicidal.

I know I should just quit but I'll lose my income, healthcare, etc. I'm applying for disability but i know that's not a speedy process. So I'm even more in a bind.

Anyone else been in a situation where you've felt trapped like this and developed a serious phobia?

I've never had a phobia of anything... Tell me if you have and did you ever overcome it?

Are those comments coming from coworkers? If so that is completely unacceptable and you should go to HR. There are no circumstances where you should have to deal with that.

I worked in an inbound call centre assisting customers of an private health insurance company and I had the same experience as you. I worked there for 18 months and my depression and anxiety got so bad that I would have panic attacks on the way to work, cry, drink alcohol on my lunch break, eventually my manager started sending me to company provided counselling but it didn't help and finally I just quit without another job to go to or any money to live on. It too was a good job in terms of pay and perks, and I was really good at it, but it was soul destroying. It's not just you! But people who are already anxious or prone to depression do tend to struggle with that kind of work.

I don't have much of a suggestion for you, except to maybe take advantage of any company provided therapy to try and find ways to minimise the anxiety. Are you taking any meds? Maybe talk to your doctor about that. The best thing to do it to get out of that job but as you've said, there's not much work out there and you need money until something else comes up so you may have to do what you can to minimise the stress of this job.

I worked inbound call center for 3 years and it was awful and I started having panic attacks driving into work.
It wasn't the right position for me and my mental state.
I feel for you! And I completely understand.
My company had EAP number I called who helped a ton at the time.

It's the customers! It's like they aren't face to face with me so they can be as cruel as they want. It's like being told off 80-100 times a day...

It really makes me feel better that I wasn't alone in this. I might just have to learn to suck it up for just a little while longer. With all my health documentation, I'm pretty sure I could get unemployment if they let me go. I'm just trying not to quit because then I qualify for nothing! I'm attempting to get disability temporarily through a lawyer.

Thank you both for sharing your experiences with me. I appreciate that you shared your stories of call center work.

I ended up on short term disability through my employer. It's about to roll over to long term. I now have a disability lawyer for ssdi. Does your company offer those benefits?

If I were you I would get some thumb tacks from the supply room and put positive affirmation on my cubicle to soothe yourself. Put it on mute and join in lol. Is there anyone on the job to help destress you maybe to laugh it off with.
Thanks for this!

My long term disability would only cover certain conditions. My condition is not listed. I've got a lawyer who will look over my case and I'll give them my insurance information and see what options I have.

Ive never heard of a disability policy that is selective like that. A lawyer to look over that option is a great idea. Good luck!
