I live in an apartment. We had a neighbor move in end of last August who has a dog... a very, very barky, yappy dog. The dog is so loud that it pierces through earplugs, wakes me from a very deep sleep, and can be heard at least a quarter mile away. And it's right under my bedroom window.

Before anyone says, I cannot move. I am disabled; the only way they are going to remove me from here is on a stretcher. (Besides, I'm too poor to move.)

I have tried everything, from leaving a polite note on the neighbor's door to reporting to county animal control to speaking with the landlord MANY times. Nothing has been done. I'm at the end of my rope. The reason why I've posted here is because this situation has made my anxiety totally intolerable. It's tantamount to having a gun-nut neighbor who loves to shoot at any hour on a whim... you just don't know when it's going to happen (except I could just call the police if my neighbor was really shooting off guns. They won't come for dog crimes.)

I don't know what else to do, and I wasn't sure where else to post this. My total health, sanity and will to live has suffered profoundly as a result of all this. Help, please!

(Note: I'm not a dog-hater, I promise. In fact, I have compassion for the dog because the owner is just throwing it outside by itself for hours. That is NOT how dogs function! They need their "pack," and this owner is clearly too self-absorbed and/or doing drugs to care.)

If you had any money you could sue for trespass. They are infringing upon the quiet enjoyment of your home which you have a right to. People have successfully sued for noise caused by animals. Might be a long shot but perhaps try researching a little and maybe leave a firmly worded more advising them of this?

Alternately, invest in some noise cancelling headphones.

Do you own your place or are you renting? I wonder if the neighbour also owns his place or rents it. If he rents, you could have a word privately with his landlord about the dog barking all of the time. In a way it's not just about noise though, it's your own health too that is a concern.
I'm just wondering what causes the dog barking? usually dogs do this if they want to go back inside. What kind of dog is it? Maybe the dog needs toys and some friendship. Sorry for all the questions.

Problem is, all those suggestions require resources I cannot obtain. I have "noise suppressing" headphones; it's not the same as the $200+ kind. But if the dog is so loud it's like a gunshot going off... how would noise-cancelling headphones work?

I do plan to send a letter to the landlord if it doesn't abate, along with some resources I found online, including a local woman who sued a neighbor for half a million dollars in "damages" from a barking dog. Hope that will wise them up

Thanks anyway.

I think it's a Cocker spaniel. I already know they're the barky kind. (Bred for hunting, maybe?) I also suspect that the tenants are tossing the dog outside so they can smoke weed without it affecting the dog (weed is legal here for recreational use.) It probably barks because it misses its "pack" inside and because we have other dogs in the area who bark incessantly, too. It has toys aplenty, but largely ignores them unless the owners are playing with it. I have talked to the landlord (we all rent here) a few times and explained what I think is going on AND about my health, but little has been done. It's sometimes better, but after a while they go back to same-old-same-old and nobody's happy. Looks like it's time to pursue legal recourse; I'd rather not do this since I'm poor and disabled and don't have the health and energy to do it... but what choice do I have? I was hoping someone else had further suggestions and/or experience to offer. Thanks.
