I am a 48 yo female who has suffered from situation panic attacks (e.g. while on an airplane). For the past 4 days, i've been having mild to moderate panic attack symptoms in wave--2 or 3 a day and they're lasting for anywhere from an hour to several hours. When it happens, I feel detached and lightheaded and as if i'm going to pass out. My heart starts palpitating and i get hot flashes and an overwhelming urge to leave whatever situation i'm in. Is this a panic attack? I've never known them to be so long or frequent or start with no apparent trigger.

Welcome to PC panicked222. I am sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. It sure sounds like classic panic/anxiety, the same symptoms I tend to get. If can be physically painful and for sure exhausting! And yes, anxiety can last longer than just a brief episode. Even though there isn't an apparent trigger, maybe you have had increased stress/pressure in your life currently.

If you feel unsure, an appointment with a doctor and lab work might be a good idea, especially to get thyroid labs and a work-up for anemia, both of which can cause anxiety symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon. Keep positive. This will pass.

Hello panicked222: Welcome to PsychCentral… from the Skeezyks! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit. We here on PC cannot diagnose you. But, yes, these certainly sound to me like panic attacks. But do see your doctor or mental health professional to get a more authoritative opinion.

PsychCentral is a great place to get information as well as support for mental health issues. There are many knowledgeable & caring members here. The more you post, & reply to other members’ posts, the more a part of the community you will become. Plus there are social groups you can join & chat rooms where you’ll be able to connect with other PC members in real time (once your first 5 posts have been reviewed & approved.) Lots of great stuff! So please keep posting!
