I've been putting off getting a therapist for a long time because I lost my job and can't afford it. I decided a few days ago just to go and put it on credit cards for the time being because my anxiety has gotten REALLY bad, and I just have no idea what else to do anymore. Every waking minute feels like pure torture, and I have the thought that I want to just die many times per day.
So anyway, I started trying to call up therapists in my insurance network, and it seems like no one ever answers their phone. I mean it makes sense that they would often be away from their phones if they're in sessions with clients, but how in the heck does anyone ever manage to schedule an appointment with a therapist if they never answer their phones? :/ Of course the few that do answer are completely booked for the rest of the year. This is stressing me out and making my anxiety even worse. I have no friends and no supportive family members to turn to for support either. I feel like I have no options and nowhere to go. |

Sorry you are having a hard time finding help! I have a few ideas that MIGHT work? Have you ever checked out the Psychology Today website? They have a "therapist finder" section that lists the therapists, their credentials, treatment orientation etc in each city/state. Often, they have a photo with the listing and they also indicate whether a sliding scale fee is available! It's very well done in my opinion.
The other possible option is online therapy via email, computer, phone etc. I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful my experience was! Check out presto experts website or better counseling and I am sure there are other reputable sites! Also just thought of this --and you MAY have already tried it but many cities have mental health clinics that offer low cost therapy, groups etc. The big drawback with this one is they often have a waiting list but if you tell them it's rather urgent, perhaps they can get you in sooner rather than later. Good luck! |

I’m sorry you’re having such a tough time. I can relate. Have you called every provider in your network and left a message then followed up? I know it’s frustrating. My therapist retired and it was difficult finding another therapist. I had to be persistent. It was difficult enough to find somebody in network that I considered Doctor on Demand.
I hope you find somebody in network soon. The above poster has some excellent ideas if you can’t. Sending big hugs. ![]() |

So sorry you are having a hard time finding someone, it is really hard. It took 3 months for me to get in for my first appointment, and the day of that appt the doctor was out sick and I had to reschedule for a month later! 4 months it took to get in. It's really tough waiting for so long when you feel like you need help now! Hope you can find someone!
