So, I started playing guitar for this church group. There are other americans here yes, but 25% of the people here are(pastors, other musicians here) are from outside of the US they are from Kenya. Now don't get me wrong they are all very nice but that part scares me... I don't know if they travel outside the US often(I am terrified of getting ebola, and I heard people who travel outside of the US can get it), I hope this doesn't sound messed up but my anxiety is high everytime I have to play at this church and hang around them for free of catching a disease(ebola) since they are originally from outside the US. Is this normal to have anxiety from this?

I'd say it is a normal fear. I'd probably be kind of cautious / nervous too. I read that Ebola can only be spread through bodily fluids though.

I see. they wanted me to sing today, and I hope I didn't get something from the microphone, but that is good to know you can't really get it from just being around them.

I can understand having anxiety and health fears because I experience it at times also! I don't know if you are aware of this, but especially in this day and age, customs and immigration are VERY strict as to whether someone is allowed to stay or even visit here. For instance, several years ago I went to visit a friend in Ontario, Canada. I live in Maine and am an American citizen. I was questioned (as we're the other passengers on the flight) as to the purpose of my visit, length of stay, where I was going to be staying, if I'd had ANY illness recently or been exposed to any that I know of etc. Ironically, just before I was scheduled to come back I came down with bronchitis, a middle ear infection AND pneumonia--all at once! I spent 8 hours and over 500 dollars (that I didn't have and had to borrow) in the emergency room. I was put on strong antibiotics and even though my flight was several days away (4 if I remember right) I was advised that I should not expect to fly for 10 days and that if I attempted to leave as scheduled I may very well be stopped from doing so. I am not minimizing your concern but I truly do think it is more anxiety based than reality based. Enjoy your music and try to focus on that. It sounds like a fun time! |

I can understand this kind of anxiety. One time, at a business conference, a man sneezed directly into my right eye. I worried for months. The probability of getting Ebola is very, very low and like another poster said, it comes from being in contact with infected body fluids. I think you are ok.
