I was taking 0 5 mg of xanex once a day for bad anxiety for the last 12 years. In addition I took ability and 60 mg of prozac as well as 2 mg of abilify. Just moved to ga and they said they can't prescribe xanex so they switched me to Buspar. Took me off abilify, now I'm having small anxiety attacks. If there's such a thing .Not working? Any suggestions.

I’m on Buspar right now. Just increased to 20 mg. I am unsure how it is impacting me. It’s really hard to tell, as other medications are being changed too at the same time (for physical conditions) and am unsure what is causing what. I can say that I think my anxiety has been better the last week or so, although I had a panic attack last night. First one in a while. Really bad though. Thought I was dying. Xanax and Buspar aren’t from the same class. They are from the same general category, but Buspar isn’t a benzo. It’s not addicting. Is it possible to see another gp or pdoc or whomever to see if you can go back onto Xanax? I’m sorry you couldn’t get prescribed more. Hope you find something that works. Sorry that my message was all over the place.

From what I know buspar acts like a anti-depressant does to depression, but to anxiety! It takes 4-6 weeks to fully take effect. IMO it is not nearly as good as xanax for panic attacks, but on the otherhand you most likely won't have to tolerance or addictive problems that come with xanax. Either side has their pros and cons.
Thanks for this!

Following this, as I just started on buspar. Too early to make any realistic judgement as to it's affectiveness, though. As earlier posters mentioned, I believe it isn't as powerful as xanex (which I've no experience of) & as with most drugs may effect you differently.

I've pretty much tried everything on the market for my anxiety throughout the years including Buspar and I felt great while taking it. The only thing is I had to take the maximum dosage allowed which I think was 60 mg/day( in divided doses, of course)Your doctor will hafta work you up to that dose, but all in all, I feel like it's the best choice especially if you have any history of substance abuse...That being said, the benzos work great for occasional or short-term use, but be warned, they are addictive, especially Xanax....Try Klonipin instead...It IS a benzo, but it seems to be less addictive...Good luck, fellow human...
