This may sound stupid but I get anxieties sometimes they even develop into a panic attack from my hot water heater running. It hums so darn loud I have told the maintance people around here it is way to loud but they say it is suppose to sound like that. I had a water heater before and they were very quiet. Matter of fact right now it is running it has about another 6 minutes before it shuts off. What I should go and do is lay down and put my headphones on. It is so odd sometimes it bothers me and other times it doesnt. It use to be really bad so much so I use to break down and cry. My friend had to calm me down. She held my hand.I dont get it why would I just get a fear of a hot water heater running? I mean it never bothered me before when I first moved here now it does.I know other people have complained about there's being loud to and when I told my shrink about it he just laughed,I am sorry but some ones fears should not be made fun of or laughed at .I had a friend who told me it was a stupid fear eeeeeeekkkk. Nobodies fears are stupid as far as I am concerned. I try to avoid it hey at one point I even turned my tv on as loud as I could didnt work. There are times when I dread that thing getting ready to turn on.Does anyone else have anxieties from noises? Funny the train can go by when I am sitting outside and it doesnt bother me and that is much louder then the heater .Hey guess what I made it ,it just shut off but I was shaking a little bit while it was running, some one once told me the problem could be from something that happened in my life so when the thing runs it triggers something .off. Please dont laugh at me because this is a real fear.

To me it is quite real and part of my experience. Sounds bother me, especially if they hum or vibrate. Like it gets in my head. I feel ya!!

It is just awful isnt it? My heater is right in my kitchen why they put it in our kitchens I will never know. It only runs for 13 minutes but sometimes it feels more like 13 hours. My friend says it sounds like the filters by the pool, it gets so loud at times I can hear it way outside but I am not allowed to shut it off, it is a law that elderly people have to have heat and hot water if I want hot water all I have to do is run cold water and warm it up in the microwave. It is just so weird how it just started scaring me like that. I have lived her for 7 years and I went 6 years without it bothering me then one day all of a sudden the noise as iI like to call it started to bother me. People looked at me like I was weird when I told them it is actually making me very anxious and I develop panic attacks. A friend of mind once told me there is something like sound anxieties. I believe it. It seems like there are anxieties for everything doesnt it? I even have to yell at the darn thing sometimes just to tell it to shut off .At one point my legs got like all pins and needles and I started shaking.Stupid noise drives me crazy.

Some fears can look silly to people, unless they experience it themselves.

what I can say from my own experience:

if you're anxious about something, or you've had trauma surrounding an event, noises like that can trigger anxiety

example:

I am allergic to being stung, so anything (a lawn mower, a buzzing light, a dvd player) will set off my anxiety- if it buzzes, it will set me off

I also have issues relating to parents and being left alone on dark, stormy days

so shaking sounds (or sounds of wind), can trigger me too

Do you think maybe this sound is reminding you of something else that frightens you?
I've also read that certain frequencies can cause people to feel intense feelings of fear/terror, there has been some speculation that this is the cause of some reported experiences of home "hauntings" - essentially, a frequency caused by something (an air duct, a fan, a *water heater*, etc) can cause feelings of unrest and fear, and even induce hallucinations in some cases. This could explain why the hot water heater bugs you and not other loud sounds, maybe it's just humming at a frequency that is unsettling to you?

Anyway, I don't think it's right of your therapist to laugh at you. You can't help what causes you fear, and it's their job to help you work through it!

Good luck. <3

Oh storms also freak me out especially thunderstorms I usually go and lay down cover myself with my blanket turn on my radio. It really doesn't help either the last couple of storms I was just about in tears, You know when I heard that heater run and I yelled at it,I felt like I was telling my mom to shut up.She verbually abused me and sometimes physically abuse too.

I feel as though the heater is not going to stop and there is nothing I can do about it,oh sure I could cut the power off but then I would get into trouble the humming is what just makes me ill.It is funny though how some days it does not bother me and other days I have to put my radio on with my headphones.I feel like when it runs something or someone is going to attack me,maybe that sounds strange but with anxieties anything is possible
