Anyone ever had anxiety from thunderstorms, tornadoes, and snow? What are some coping skills I can use to calm my anxiety?

Yes!! I have a totally irrational, unexplained fear of tornadoes. I have recurring nightmares about them. I have been very close to serious damage caused by tornadoes, and I've seen a few funnel clouds too up close and personal for my taste. Because tornadoes tend to go hand in hand with thunderstorms and hurricanes, I don't like them, either. So far, I haven't found a way to cope. I've thought about getting a weighted blanket, since those seem to help calm dogs when they are anxious, but I'm not usually in a place or situation where I could just whip out my blanket when dark clouds are approaching, so I haven't tried that. __________________ https://imaginativefusion.wixsite.com/mysite/blog Winners are losers who got up and gave it one more try. - Dennis DeYoung "It is possible to turn poison into medicine." ~ Tina Turner Remember we're all in this alone. ~ Lily Tomlin |

On holiday once, I got caught in an electrical storm, it was beautiful and terrifying all at once. Lol, probably not great advice (I was in remote location) but, my coping skills to cam me in the moment, was to sing at the top of my lungs. It helps calm me, singing....or deep breathing centres you

Over the years, I've learned that just about anything one person experiences, there are others out there who do/have also. Each person's specific manifestations and feelings may vary, but we are usually not completely alone. That is one of the great things about forums like PC, support groups, talking about our fears with others, etc. We can find allies.

I get bad weather anxiety when we have a trip planned. One time we were coming back from a trip and were in the car for 3 hours and we were driving in 50 mph winds on the highway. It was so bad our car was swerving in and out of the lane. There was an 18 wheeler down a hill on it’s side and a state trooper was walking up to the drivers side. I cancelled my trip to Memphis because of how bad the weather has been down there. I’m going somewhere else and I’m hoping we don’t get bad weather there either.

I absolutely are afraid of thunderstorms and heavy winds basically because it seems like every single time we get a bad storm we lose power I do have a generator but it takes forever to kick in,Last night when I woke up at2m nothing not 15 minutes later I could hear that nosy thunder. It started the minute I tried go back to sleep the good news I fell right back to sleep thank God because it was suppose to be a scary one,u can do what I do, just lay down take a blanket and cover your face with it, sounds odd but I cannot stand that lightening either. They scare the living daylights out of me

Oh, yeah, I was so wrapped in thinking about how terrified I feel just before and during a rough storm or hurricane, I didn't even think about the power outage part. That soooo sucks, too. I've never had a generator. Many times, I've been stuck with no power in the winter due to ice and wind, and then in thunderstorm/hurricane season. The longest in the summer was 14 days, and temps were in the upper 90's. In the winter, the longest was 7 days, with temps near or below freezing. I have anxiety right now remembering all of those times....

I am having tornado anxiety now. There is a nasty line of storms coming my way. I live about 2 hours SE of St. Louis, more or less. The weather folks are saying there is a tornado ON THE GROUND up in the city!!
It doesn't seem like we will have problems where I live, but I hate the anxiety I experience when these rude weather events happen. __________________ "Love you. Take care of you. Be true to you. On one of our local news broadcasts, they use the the phrase "First Alert Weather Day" whenever there is a high chance for bad weather (like severe storms, ice, flooding, etc). Since this thread started, I found myself changing their phrase to "Weather Anxiety Day" - in my head.

I hear you! I have a headache from my anxiety. Channel 5 up in the city is great for ongoing coverage when there is dangerous weather going on. I can listen to them on my phone; that helps me feel safe.
They have seen 2 different tornadoes in the past 30 minutes up in St. Louis. Where I am seems stormy but not dangerous tornado wise. UGH!!!!!!!!!! __________________ "Love you. Take care of you.
