So school ended yesterday and I had my session with my therapist this morning and she thinks to keep me active during the Summer I should get a Summer job. When she suggested that my anxiety went through the roof. It was bad enough that I just had to survive going to school everyday away from the comforts of my home and I had come to have safety nets at my school which were being able to go the School Counselor Office at any time, the Nurse, or use my cell phone at any time which is not allowed by students to call my parents. Now this sits in front of me. First, I have never had a job in my life so going through an interview has anxiety written all over it. Then most jobs for teens my age are dealing with people which is more anxiety for me. I don't know what to do? I told my therapist it really scares me and she said to me and so did going back to school when I first did. Which was true. Now I am sitting in my room chewing on my nails doing nothing but thinking about this. AHHHHHH!!!!!!

Do you have a special interest like animals, sport etc that you could volunteer or work in? Does it need to be work or could you volunteer?

I guess it could be a volunteer job as well. I do like movies so I was thinking of applying at a movie theater. I also like dogs so maybe I could be a Pet Sitter. As for sports I like Soccer, but I don't know how well I'd do as a Summer Camp Sports Counselor.

Hello Misery Business,
thank you for sharing your truth with us here and welcome to PC Sorry you are struggling with anxiety. I live with PTSD myself and the docs think it's been present since my childhood. I'm a lot older than you...in my 30s now. I understand how challenging anxiety can be. I also think it sounds like you found yourself a good therapist! While it will likely be challenging for you to take on a summer job, I think that could be a very healthy challenge. Something I've learned over time about anxiety is that it can shrink a person's life if not kept in check. I saw this happen with both of my parents. Their worlds grew smaller and smaller as more and more things made them anxious. So as young as you are, I think it is a great time to branch out and not let the anxiety rule over your life. By that I do *not mean that it's going to be easy or like flipping a switch....more like something to chip away at in small increments. Then in time, you look back and think: Wow! I did that! Any interest in mindfulness and meditation? Those help me a great deal. The earlier a person learns about those, the sooner they can make them daily habits. They are research-based methods for ameliorating anxiety. You may also be interested to read about radical acceptance. That has helped me with a couple of situations in my life which were unpleasant and I had zero control over the outcome. Re: a summer job....work can really help with mental wellness by providing structure, routine, and a sense of connection and accomplishment. I was listening to a psychologist talking the other day about how he helps his clients. He said the first thing he always asks is: do you have a job? Because based on his clinical experience, he finds that clients experience a greater sense of chaos and lack of purpose when they don't have some level of work in their life. And of course that will mean different things for different people. A few hours a week volunteering, part-time work, full-time work. I wish you peace, hope, and a bright future! You deserve it |

I do agree with you and my therapist that adding structure and a routine to my Summer will help me. It will only be a PT Job and working no more than 20 hours per week, as I still have my weekly therapy sessions to attend. I have never tried mediation exactly, but I do like to relax to music. The two things I really like to do is writing in a journal daily as well as coloring. Those two thing really help me relax when I am anxious and my thoughts are roaming to the past. I really appreciate the information you gave me. |

Your coloring and journal-writing sound like excellent strategies. I am happy to share meditation options with you if you're interested. Just give me a shout. I will continue to wish you peace and good health. |

Is that similar to writing in a journal? Just a daily kind of how you day has gone on a daily basis?

It can be what you want it to be about. Like mine are all about mental health and how it can get out of whack and how to get better. I blog about situations I want to increase awareness about, plus topics I hope to connect with others like me. And, it can be private or public. That is up to the blogger.

I am not sure about the blogs on here. I have a blog on google and two on Wordpress. I am just thinking about how you write as an outlet.

I write on a daily basis to get my feelings out that have occurred in that day. It basically gives me good reference to go back to if I am suffering on another day. That is what I use the journal for.
