What are the chances that a specific obsessive thought would occur in real life? Mine borders around infidelity. Everytime I have a thought, it is about a woman who cheats on a good husband with a huge multitude of partners. "my wife slept with half the town we lived in." "It is like the wife in a more literal sense slept with half the town and the husband had to leave to keep the wife from cheating because the wife hates her husband, does not care for her husband because she is an evil b****. the poor husband has to leave the husband because the w**** couldn't keep her legs closed." Those are my obsessive thoughts. What are the chances that those things occur in real life? The fact that people cheat are not what worries me, though it should since it is wrong, but the specific example like the one posted here. Most of my scenarios are repetitive and are exaggerated like this one. Is real life more mundane and boring than this scenario or does this happen in real life, or does this rarely, if ever happen in real life? I am talking about a specific example since OCD is about specifics?

I'm a little confused. These thoughts are about women who cheat in general or you're thinking this about specific people?
At any rate, the popular statistic is that 60% of men and 40% of women will cheat at some point in their life. I should mention though that some experts believe this number is becoming closer to 60% for each sex as more and more women attain financial independence. Your specific example is wildly extreme but you seem to recognize that. Why do you think you dwell on this? Do you have trouble trusting women? These thoughts are about women who cheat with multiple partners, but my thoughts are rather extreme. I admit that mainly someone like a sex addict or prostitute would be the closest to literally sleeping with an entire town. Here is the irony: I seem to have little respect for a woman and I am a woman myself. My views (OCD ones) are as extreme as my thoughts and I wonder if the specific thoughts like the ones I posted the ones that are extreme occur in real life.

No one sleeps with entire towns or other such populations because the other people have wills of their own, aren't things. Not every man in the town would want to sleep with that woman or would have the opportunity to do so. Even a sex addict only sleeps with people who are willing to sleep with him or her. There's not enough time, place or "interest" for a single person to do whole populations in a reasonable scenario. Even books and movies have to imply years of time for people to have slept with very many people.

GeeN, have you engaged in sexual activity that you now regret or feel was dishonest or immoral? Or maybe you've had urges that you're uncomfortable with? These sound like they could be very guilty thoughts.

If I had any of those issues or if I have been cheated on, I would understand it, but since I am not guilty, I don't. So they cannot be guilty thoughts. What could these thoughts be the result of? |

I get thoughts that policemen will arrest me whenever I see a policeman, and there is no explanation.....it seems to symbolize feeling like my time is up, my game about always seeking drama is caught up to, my number is called, I guess I feel guilty, like the way I live my life so differently from others isn't understood and I deserve to be in jail...........but you know what I do? I fight my thoughts......when I see a policeman, I imagine him driving right by, not even looking in my direction.....then I think have I committed a crime? No, no, no, he'll just walk right by me.....and they always do...
Could you picture an old married couple that has been together 48 years? They still laugh at each other, still hold hands? I think the way to fight strange thoughts is to think the opposite.......... __________________ |

it depends on how ofter you think them and how much you BELIEVE them
if you don`t believe in them..they have much less chance to occur..the LOA is talking exacly about what you are asking! (Low Of Attraction) Of course, the point is HOW to change them! unfortunately,,,i sometimes don`t know how to do that myself. |
