@Discombobulated - There are some difficult decisions to make all around, aren't there? In the end, all of these vaccines are only approved for emergency use. There is still a lot we do not know - how long does protection last, how will they work on the variants, will they help you avoid long Covid, are there any longer-term health effects of the vaccine that we aren't seeing yet? There's so much to wonder about. Hopefully, bit by bit we will start to get more clarity.

So on the news yesterday, they said some areas were giving out Pfizer as first doses because they needed Sinocrap for people's second doses. So, I went to try to get Pfizer I was shot down. The woman said they were out, but I'm not sure if I believe it. I kind of have a flair for drama at times and that was one of those times. I threw the number down on the table, said there is no way I was going to get that vaccine and stormed out. The guy that was controlling the entrance and the woman that gave me the number looked at me in shock. I guess no one had done that before.

I am now trying to get in touch with the pulmonologist I used to see when I lived in the capital to see if he can give me a medical certificate saying I need Pfizer.

Whoo hoo, we hit over 9,000 cases yesterday and the Health Ministry are saying they need more ICU beds. Hmm, weren't they saying a few weeks ago that thanks to the wonderful Sinovac vaccine, things would start to improve by mid-April?

Now a study on Sinovac in Brazil shows only a 49.6% real world effectiveness. That's even worse than the trials also done in Brazil that showed it was 50.4%. There is no way Chile is going to vaccinate itself out of the pandemic with such a low-efficacy product. Yet, our government continues to say we will have herd immunity by June.

I totally understand what you did in regards to Cinocrap.

Ugh. Went out for a walk today. I was expecting the streets to be busy because it's warm and sunny today (after we had snow earlier this week). I did not expect certain places to be blatantly ignoring the entire pandemic. Lots of people standing around outside a pub - which is supposed to be closed?! Worst of all, blocking the entire sidewalk so you could barely get past, no chance of keeping any distance

hvert - Apparently that was the idea of the Health Minister who resigned last year. Of course with the Brazilian variant that they laid out the red carpet for, it looks like you can easily get it again if you had another variant the first time. That's what happened in Manaus, Brazil. So many people got Covid in the first wave there, that they were considered to have herd immunity. But, the Brazilian P.1 variant appeared and many people are dealing with reinfections.

I read somewhere, I can't track it down right now, where an infectious disease specialist was saying that with a 50% effective vaccine, you'd need about 20% more people to get sick and recover to have herd immunity. And that was before the variants started popping up. With a population of 19 million, 3.8 million would need to get Covid to reach that 20%. We are closing in on 1.1 million infected. I guess you'd need another 2.7 million to get it, but that's likely a moot point due to the new variants anyways.

Well, bad news, I struck out with the pulmonologist. He did call me yesterday, but he took the line that I just need to go and get what is on offer because it will give me some protection.

Oh, and, this is being reported on in many media outlets: China admits its vaccines aren't very good - POLITICO . I wonder if it's going to get any coverage here or if the government is going to try and censor it. There have been suspicious things going on with some articles about people dying from Covid after having both doses. From the article:

BEIJING — In a rare admission of the weakness of Chinese coronavirus vaccines, the country’s top disease control official says their effectiveness is low and the government is considering mixing them to get a boost.
Chinese vaccines “don’t have very high protection rates,” said the director of the China Centers for Disease Control, Gao Fu, at a conference Saturday in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

@AzulOscuro - People here have started to refer to it as Suerovac!

(Suero is the saline solution they use in IVs.)

The implication is that they are vaccinating us with something as useful as salt water.

Well the goalposts have been moved again. The Health Minister is saying that we should start to see some improvement in the numbers in May.

Apparently we should expect a stricter lockdown of 6-8 weeks. Sigh. Whatever. Not gonna work if people don't care.

@BreakForTheLight - On Friday when I went into town to try and get vaccinated, it didn't look like we were in lockdown at all. There were traffic jams and lines to get into the supermarket and banks. There were three military guys stopping people at one checkpoint but no other controls that I could see.

Now, the former Health Minister came out to say that it is dishonest for the government to come out and say that we will reach herd immunity by June. I definitely agree with him there!

@rechu it sounds like your country needs someone to question those in charge, I am glad to hear your former health minister is speaking out.

You were the first person I heard talking about the Chilean vaccine paradox and it wasn't being reported in the UK. More and more I am now reading articles about it - speculation about what went wrong. At first the articles focussed on people ignoring other measures (social distancing) and relying on the vaccine but now I notice they are starting to talk about efficacy of the Sinovac.

I can guess it. In the same way there are groups of the population that ignore all the rules as if the pandemic wouldn’t exist, there are others who are close to paranoia. I don’t blame these latter though because there’s been a lot of confusion about the availability and also the effectiveness of some vaccines.

I recognise I was a little paranoid.
I used to tell people off with loud comments when they didn’t accomplish the norms. Not anymore. Each case is different and if I see a person who is not with the mask on his nose or mouth, I think maybe this person has a respiratory problem.

I still see people who comes into a supermarket and don’t wash their hands with gel when the gel is there at their disposition. These are things I don’t understand but I don’t say anything to them anymore. I try to accomplish myself with the norm the best I can and of course, try to keep as much distance as I can from people. Indeed, this distance should be, in my opinion, being settled forever, as a polite rule. I would be the happiest person ever.

And we still have to be grateful that the responsible on the governments put stricter rules if not, this would be Sodoma and Gomorra. It says a lot of the evolve of human brain.

I have seen how while governments took decisions towards increase or maintain restrictions, it seems they have relaxed the orders to the police officers in the street. At least, this is the impression I have from here, because at the beginning of the pandemia there were lots of cars of police officers in the street. I see now some kind of relaxation. I don’t want to think bad but maybe it’s the price we have to pay to avoid turn down the Economy.
I don’t know it.
There are having lots of contradictions. Thus, the deceased people is only present as a number and said kind of hidden among many other dates and numbers. I don’t see it ethical.

@AzulOscuro - Put some whiskey in your water - I think that's a line from a song!

Not surprisingly, the Health Ministry press conference today was a total mess. The Minister was asked about the revelations of the Chinese vaccine efficacy and if he is changing his idea of when we could reach herd immunity. All he did was deflect and change the subject.

It's always something, deflecting, lies of omission. I wonder if he and the president are going to last to the end of their terms. If you read the comments on Twitter and to articles about all this, people are getting increasingly angry, which isn't surprising.

I wonder if he had been more honest about the vaccine efficacy earlier on, if people would have been more careful. He has been saying people are "immunized" 2 weeks after the second dose, when this vaccine doesn't confer immunity. In theory (although who knows at this point), it mainly helps keep you out of the hospital or from dying. So, I am sure that people relaxed after receiving their vaccines, thinking they were more protected than they were.

We are coming up on 4 weeks of lockdown in my area. Supposedly, 4 weeks was going to be the maximum but it was another lie. I know of people in areas reaching 6 and 7 weeks. He was asked about that in the press conference too and gave some jumbled word salad that didn't answer the question. Really we are on a plane without a pilot, or maybe a ship without a captain. Whatever it is; it's bad.

Well today they announced over 45s can book their vaccination appointments so that's good news for me, but unfortunately there was such a scramble to book that the website crashed.

I've been talking to friends a little older who've recently had theirs and apparently if you don't book via the national vaccination system your GP should contact you. This would be much better for me as no car so can't travel far to the big centres, if I wait hopefully I'll get my local centre which is 20 minutes walk from here. So I'll wait for my GP to contact me.

Hope you can get your vaccine soon, Discombulated! My dad is finally scheduled for his first shot on Thursday. It'll be ages before I get mine though.

Apparemtly coronasomnia is a thing - I'm definitely suffering from it I haven't been sleeping very much/very well for weeks and it's getting pretty bad now. I feel ill from lack of sleep today

I notice that when I take my breaks while working from home, I don't fully disconnect from work. Even after work. Because my living room is also my office. I used to always go for a walk outside around the building for my 15 minute breaks in my old job. Now I just sort of aimlessly wander around my flat. To the kitchen, to my couch, to my desk. Still check my laptop every now and again. Check my watch to see how much time I have left. Pick up a book, realize I only have 5 minutes left. But I don't relax. (And yes I could still go outside for a walk, but I'd spend most of my break time walking up and down the stairs to my flat.)

Coronasomnia. Yeah, I hear you on that. Insomnia is one of the ways that my anxiety first manifests myself along with lack of appetite. I have not been sleeping well either all due to the disaster that this country is becoming and the conflict with my husband over the vaccine. I have a headache today due to nights of bad sleep. The colder nights which end up with the dogs trying to burrow under the covers doesn't help I woke up with a dog squashed against me with his snout 2 cm from my face today! That's not comfortable. I was going to get this bed that was sort of like a cave for the one dog that is always cold and does that the most to keep her out of bed, but of course it's out of stock everywhere.

I get on the being hard to disconnect from work. I've worked from home a lot and was able to disconnect, but this inability to get out of the house and virus exhaustion has affected my habits and I find it harder these days.

My husband is back trying to push me to get the vaccine again. Like we discussed before, I understand his reasons if he has to go back to work, he would feel badly if he brought it home and gave it to me. But I have just less and less faith that that crap vaccine is going to do anything. I saw a link to a summary of the Brazilian study that said "There were 9,823 participants who received the two doses and were followed for at least 14 days and had, therefore, reached the final efficacy analysis. There were 253 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the cohort: 85 cases (11.0/100 person-year) among 4,953 participants in the vaccine group, and 168 cases (22·3/100 person-year) among 4,870 participants in the placebo group. The primary efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 was 50·7% (95%CI 36·0-62·0)." So, they got their efficacy figures by following people for only 14 days or maybe more in some cases but who knows how many for longer? How is that even science. How many vaccinated/non-vaccinated people got sick after 20 days, 30 days, two months? We don't know! What a joke!

200,000 Pfizer arrived yesterday. I could go between tomorrow and Friday. I heard it may be more possible to get Pfizer in the AM. I have another thing I am going to try. I'm honestly game for anything these days. My ID says I was born in the US (I have Chilean citizenship too). I could message the municipality and tell them I need Pfizer because I had to put off a trip to the US due to the pandemic and I need to arrange to see my family in the US after the borders open. I could then indicate that Sinovac doesn't have approval in the US and I worry there may be quarantine upon entry or other requirements since I won't be considered vaccinated. My sister lives in San Francisco and she said that there are already events like baseball games where you need proof of vaccination to get in and that is likely to become more common as more people in the US get vaccinated.
