I have allowed all my credits from graduate school to expire. I have no one who will sponsor me for a professional certificate that I need to get the old job back that I foolishly gave up. I wasn’t very good at it anyway so I’m probably only fooling myself. You can’t even begin to imagine how useless I am imagine the laziest person you have ever run across in your life and multiply that by ten fold. My life will be meaningless until I die. I’m emotionally immature the list of character flaws I have goes on and on.

Dear annoyedgrunt84,

I let all my graduate school credits expire too so I can definitely identify with that situation. Wish I knew what to say that would help ease your pain and grief.

My English is not very good but I want to tell you that reading your post helps me with my own struggles. Sometimes just knowing that one isn't alone in one's misery helps more than all the advice in the world. Your post helps me and will help many others who read it.

No one who helps another person in their suffering is or can ever be a useless person. I think helping others is one of the highest, if not the highest virtue and moral excellence there is in life. So to me, you are a noble and heroic person.

So sorry about my English.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

Is that how you see yourself or how others see you?

I don't know sometimes I fear it's even worse than I think. I think the people around me may have an even lower opinion of me than I have of myself.

Hi Grunt. The credits expired, but you still have the knowledge and insight you gained taking those courses. No one can take that away from you. Becoming a more educated person is never a waste of time. I dropped out of graduate school after just two semesters. I then went and got an associate degree in something that was unrelated to what my bachelor's degree had been in. That associate's degree is what I made my living from. It may seem that I spent a lot of time in college that never paid off. I don't look at it that way. That extra education is something I "use" all the time. It has given me more confidence when I've had to engage with other educated persons.

You need to replot your journey forward. Yes, you blew an important set of opportunities. Now you have to look outside that set. There are other options for you, but you're blind to those because you got derailed. Stop thinking about the doors that are closed to you right now. Tell yourself that you've got to make a living. Then see who would hire you. Some employer out there will.

You feel lazy and unmotivated because this is not what you envisioned. Life never goes completely as planned for anyone. Open your eyes to a broader array of possible moves you can make. Then make a move.
