I’ve recently developed an extreme fear of messages I’ve sent being leaked. Mostly because I’ve been in some situations which upset me and I vented about them to a some friends then instantly regretted it. I don’t say anything bad about the people e.g. someone close to me snapped at me at me at of the full and I my brain just seemed to shut down, I was on the verge of tears and so I just told my friends to get it off my chest. There was a split second before typing the message where I thought “no, just leave it” but I sent it anyway and now I hate myself and regret it. I didn’t say anything bad about anyone, just objectively explained what had happened but my friends were responding talking about how wrong the person and offering suggestions like stop going to their house and that made me feel terrible. I’ve since deleted the messages but you can still see my friends’ responses.

It’s unlikely these messages would ever get exposed but I’m still having extreme anxiety because if the person who snapped at me ever found out I’m sure they’d be hurt, angry and then our entire circle would know and they’d hate me too. I just want to disappear. I wish I could undo my actions.

I feel like that too but to a lesser degree I think. Anxiety is a huge presence in my life as well as panic attacks. I think your feelings are totally understandable. I have regrets and fears about things I have written that could be widely disseminated. Wish I knew how to help but I am kind of in the same boat. My heart goes out to you.

A good friend should keep things you have told them in confidence, unless they had a reason to think that you might be a danger to yourself or someone else.
