For the last 12 months I have had an increase in anxiety. When I was younger I was diagnosed with selective mutism. I haven't had it for the past 10 years but recently with the increase in anxiety, symptoms of selective mutism have starting coming back. I have reached out for professional help but have been constantly denied because they don't know how to work with someone who has selective mutism considering it is so rare. This has resulted in an overall feeling of hopelessness. I am basically begging for help at this point. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this situation?

That's the other issue I'm facing since selective mutism is mostly in children, psychologists who specialize in it only work with children. I am a young adult so they won't take me.

That really sucks. I find it's the same way with autism. I'm pretty sure I'm on the spectrum, but most professionals only work with children.

That sounds frustrating, do you have any professional help at all or a contact at the moment? It seems to me like there should be a duty of care whereby if one professional can’t help you they should refer to someone who can? You deserve help with this, I’m not even sure it’s a very rare issue.

I'm using a service that basically finds providers for you around your area that take your insurance but they are having the same issue as I am. All the providers they have found who specialize in selective mutism either don't take insurance or only work with children.
