What medication has helped you with anxiety?

Once I was prescribed Gabapentin for anxiety. It didn't help.

Ativan did help me, but I needed at least 1.5 mg to feel any relief. That was 3 years ago.

I'm almost afraid to ask for anxiety medication.

@Rose76 I take Xanax but I wish I had ativan. It works faster. And I am wary of Xanax so I don't always take it when I need to. HUGS kit

Thank you. I've always heard Xanax is very addicting. I've never taken it. I'm trying to work up the nerve to ask for one of them.

In the past doctors have wanted to give me antipsychotics and anticonvulsants. They were useless to me. I need something that kicks in quickly and stops me feeling like I'm becominng close to hysterical.

I've taken benzos most of my life and klonopin wears off quickly. Saphris stopped my anxiety in November but stopped working.

@cool09 - thank you. Saphris I've never heard of, but I'll look it up. Once I was put on Klonopin. It didn't seem to do anything for me. But I think they tend to prescribe fairly low doses.

I hope you're doing alright with your own anxiety issue.

Hi Rose
Look up diaphragmatic breathing. Takes a few times to learn the skill and it not hard. It works way faster than any med I ha e e er taken for anxiety. SSRI's work well for most people in my experience. Hope you got out today.

Paxil stopped my anxiety 25 yrs ago, all the other SSRIs didn't do anything for my anxiety (or depression).

@cool09 I was put on an SSRI years ago. I don't think it was Paxil. That's great that it did that much for you. Thanks.

My pdoc is switching me from Xanax to Klonopin. We will see how it does. I don't have the prescription filled yet. He just sent it last night.

I would be very interested to know how you would compare the two of them. I hope switching doesn't cause you more anxiety.

Were you getting panic attacks or was it more continuous worrying? Anything that you can describe would interest me. I'm trying to understand anxiety because it's kind of new to me. Mostly I've just dealt with depression. I think anxiety is worse.

I'm hoping the Klonopin will be helpful. From what he explained, I need to take it more consistently than I was taking the Xanax to get the full effect.

I usually just have anxiety--to various forms of instability and disability. But lately (2 or 3 months) I have been getting panic attacks. They are so severe that I am getting them 5 or 6 times a day. I am managing to go to work but I am having panic attacks there too. I don't know what is causing so much distress that my body is freaking out like this. But it is.

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder diagnosed, and although it hasn't been diagnosed I think I also may have panic disorder and social anxiety disorder. OCD has also been thrown out there as a possibility which I don't know for sure but may be tied to my anxiety. I have anxiety about potentially hurting someone, and stuff like that even though I am non-violent towards others and would rather die than hurt someone else. My psychiatrist says they are intrusive thoughts and that I am not going crazy.

I can't get away from the anxiety so I hope this change of medication helps. Once when I was at the ER I had a panic attack and they gave me a lovely shot of ativan. It worked so fast and it was like sweet relief. Don't know if the pill form would be as effective though. My psychiatrist says I wait too long to take the medicine and by then I am all worked up and getting panic attacks. So he is instructing me to take them twice a day hopefully before I start to have bad anxiety.

I am anxious about everything. And I am anxious about being anxious.

Don't know if this helps. Sorry you are going through it. HUGS kit

@SlumberKitty - thank you for discussing your struggle with anxiety. Your pdoc seems truly interested in helping you. I hope the Klonopin works out for you. That was noteworthy that the shot of Ativan was effective. I'll see what my primary wants to do for me.

I like propranolol for anxiety much better than the benzos. I was on and off all of them at various times but I never liked the feeling I got from them. The buzzed feeling. The propranolol deals with the physical effects of anxiety without that feeling.

Breathing exercises helped me.
I need to spend more time outdoors.
And soothing teas also helped.

Thanks for that feedback. I was put on propranolol many years ago. It didn't help me. In my case, I think I need that buzzed, sedated feeling to override the anxiety, when it's strong. What I had recently was over-the-top anxiety. It has largely subsided for now. Right now I don't really need anything for it. Still I am grateful for this discussion.

Getting out of the house is good for me in a lot of ways. An odd thing was happening to me. I was sometimes feeling so disturbed outside doing things that I'ld rush back to my apartment. Othertimes, when I was out, I would dread returning to my apartment and stay out longer, avoiding going home. Those anxious feelings feel gone now.

I have a lot to catch up on. I better do what I can today. I like tea also. I'm looking to buy a really pretty tea cup to make tea breaks feel more special.

I take diazepam for my anxiety.

In the past I've been on lorazepam, clonazepam and alprazolam. Lorazepam made me hallucinate, clonazepam made me depressed, and alprazolam was too addicting.

I like the diazepam. It's like a nice combo between clonazepam and alprazolam.

I hope you get anxiety relief soon. Anxiety is a *****.
