Hi loser37. I have really bad panic attacks if I am around alot of people in a place where i feel vulnerable and closed in. I don't really have any suggestions on if it happens again. I just try to tell myself I'll be ok and after a little bit it passes.

I did the same exact thing lastnight. It was scary. I just turned on the t.v. and tried to cooncentrate on that. It helped a little.

What were you thinking or worrying about or focusing on when it started?

I think it kinda depends on the kind of anxiety attack it is. I have been in positions where I can identify them and practice this exercise I was taught. If I can go off and be my myself for a little while I almost think of them as another voice in my head and yell back and them tell them to go away. It's a practice that I learned a long time ago in CBT and when I am able to use it - it is very helpful. Giving them a voice lets me know what the panic is about and I am able to let them know I am listening but won't let them ruin my day.

Often times taking something to calm down and refocus my energy is also really helpful. I have had pretty bad ones, so much so that I decided not to spend a year abroad b/c at the time I did not know other people had them and was afraid of being away and having one.

I agree with what has been said, that sometimes they happen when my defenses are down and I am feeling calm. It's almost like a reminder that I always have to be on guard. In those moments I just try to focus on what is immediately in front of me and be in the moment as much as I can.

Keep us posted.

Loser37,

I totally understand. I too have terrible attacks when I go to service. As I am a pretty religious person, it really is a HUGE part of what I do on a weekly basis.

I found that by going to church when their is no one there, helps me. Its like taking baby steps with your thought process. Then if the church is really full I stay in the crying rooms, or in the hall. That way I know if something happens, not only am I close to an exit, but will not embarrass myself.

Hope this helps.
