Ok, so we are moving into a new place. We are sticking with the same management company because they have always been really cool and friendly with us.
Well, the ad stated that they pay for water, sewer and trash (although they have taken down the ad, so I don't have that proof). So, my husband called and asked what day they would have the water on for us and she said that they would turn the water on for us tomorrow (that would be today), but we would have to put it in our name on the 1st of May.
I was at work when he emailed me and I was really upset. I told him to check the lease and sure enough, it stated water was paid.
I called the lady and the first thing she said was, "Oh, my mistake, I accidentally left it in the lease." I told her, well, the landlord is paying it, right? and she said, well, it was my mistake (chuckle) and the water is paid by the tenant at that location. I told her, "well, it is in the lease" and she said "well, it's only like $10 a month" (yeah right!) and I said "we never budgeted for water and are already strapped for money". She said (in an attitudinal way) "well, it is what it is." and I said, "ok, thank you. Bye" and she just hung up on me.

Yes they are letting us move in early, yes they gave us the only second set of keys they have, yes they came down and brought the keys to us when they didn't have to. BUT, why should I have to pay water when it was stated in two different spots that it was?

Why did I put this in this forum? Because I am SOOOO anxious about this. I can't stop thinking that they hate me, they are out to get me and that I have to watch my back. I feel nauseous. I don't like feeling like they are trying to get back at us. She is really mad at me, but I wasn't the one that made the mistake.
Part of me just wants to pay the water to make her happy and like me again. I feel like I am going to panic and just freak out. I hope I can sleep tonight!

Was I totally wrong to hold her to the lease??? Should I just pay the water?

How do I stop worrying so much about this?

((((((((((((onlyme))))))))))))) That seems like a very frustrating situation. Everyone makes mistakes but here is the thing...if it is in the lease, they have to pay it. Try not to feel bad about that. That is not your fault. They made the mistake, not you. So no, you definitely shouldn't pay it. Good luck hun...be strong

I have read your message several times. So you thought you wouldn't have to pay for the water because of the advert but now it turns out that you do have to pay it? I can understand why you are upset about this and it sounds like the landlord is not going to back down. Unfortunately I think you are going to have to pay it if it is written in the lease. Moving is stressful enough, it never runs smoothly!

Hugs

Thank you!

Miray, thanks for the support. I will not pay for it!

Peg - It was listed as water being paid both in the ad and on the lease, but the lady at the management company said she made a mistake....after we signed the lease. So, they made the error. Thank goodness it wasn't our mistake!

Fuzzybear - Thank you!

If it's in the lease, and that was your understanding, I would not pay for the water either. But I bet they will raise your rent to cover the cost when it's up next year.

Yeah, raising the rent is part of what we are afraid of. That's why we are doing everything we can NOW to get our credit up so that we can buy a house while the market here is still low! I talked to a couple of realtors and they said that the market isn't going to raise that much in one year, so we should be just fine buying then.
