I am at my wit's end- after a long and difficult (but successful) struggle with mental illness and drug addiction in my own life (I have now been sober AND medication free for over 3 yrs), I finally found my soul mate/true love of my life....one problem....he has a severe case of Adult ADD/ADHD and I don't know how to cope with it. Please read my intro on my profile, it tells everyone the basics of what I am dealing with. I need help, I do not want to lose the best thing that has ever happened to me....is there anyone from the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area that knows of a local support group? Any input would be much appreciated!

As the half of a relationship/marriage WITH ADHD, let me see what I can do for you here (though I am in MN).

There are support groups and online groups for the spouses of "ADDers". When someone is NOT ADHD, it can be really difficult to understand the person that is.

Case in point, I was diagnosed/started medication and coaching in August of this year after our oldest daughter was diagnosed. I have been studying and reading up on it as since I understand depression and anxiety (having battled those over half my life!) I didn't understand ADHD. I had been tested at age 10 and told I was NOT. My husband doesn't get it at all. D started reading a book on it and realized that the majority of my "traits" he had issues with could be traced back to ADHD symtomology. So now he is confused and wonders if he had the right to get irritated/angry with those things.

In talking to him last night, he mentioned he has seen a drastic change in me. That I am calmer, think things through and see situations more clearly. That said, he still doesn't understand why I have to do some of the things I do to work WITH my ADHD, not against it. He doesn't understand why my brain works so differently then his. It is something we are still working on through Family Therapy.

Feel free to PM me and I will share what I've learned if you think it will help!

I can recommend an excellent therapist in that area, very familiar with ADHD in adults and everything else---either for yourself to deal effectively with the problems, or for your BF if you can convince him to come in-----

Feel free to PM me.

Being bipolar, I get really mad at him but I am starting to understand that it is little by little and small rewards that work to reach him. Yes
