21 year old undergrad student.
I have a couple of problems that are bad with ADD. I have a lack of motivation sometimes in everyday things and completing school tasks. I will start something and be excited about it for two weeks and then stop. Like starting a blog or completing a workout with the goal of being able to do 100 push ups. I get really excited when I start things, even when a new semester starts I get really excited with all of my classes and go all the time but as the semester goes on I start becoming uninterested and by the end of the semester I am on the verge of failing my classes. I feel like I build up good things and then before I reach my goals it comes crashing down. I just want to keep building things and not have them fall and have to start all over again because its just to frustrating for me and my parents. It even happens when I start a book I'm reading and I don't finish it.
P.S. I have a 1.99 GPA right now and I'm asking the school to keep me so I can complete the 9 classes I have left to graduate.

Does anyone else have this problem and what do you do to fix/prevent/change this?

Hi there, are you on meds? If not do you take fish oil? Are you doing any kind of therapy? You sound like my son to a degree. It's hard I know, but maybe meds will help you to keep focussed.

Oh wow I relate exactly!! Well...except for the undergrad part. I am currently enrolled in a two year degree program that is taking me almost 4 to complete. I find myself in the exact same boat as you now...and am looking for any kind of help or advice on how to over come all of this. As I type this I have a research paper due in 2 weeks that I have yet to start. Not because I don't want to, but every time I sit down to do it i can't concentrate.

Maybe if we put our heads together we can figure something out...

Step 1: Decide what you are going to work on.
Step 2: Get a timer.
Step 3: Set timer for 10 mins.
Step 4: Only work on what you need to for those 10 minutes.
Step 5: Set timer for 15 mins.
Step 6: Do something fun.
Step 7: Repeat steps 3 through 6 until you have finished what you are working on.

The main thing is to stay focused on the task at hand for 10 mins at a time. You might need to find a room where you can be by yourself and have no distractions.

Once you master 10 mins you can start increasing the time by 5 mins. I can do around 30 mins of work, before I get totally distracted now.

Thanks Queen for that information. I hope you don't mind if I share it with my brother-in-law. At age 50, he has decided to go to college and he is nervous about it.

I know how you feel. I was the same way in college and usually found myself writing papers at the very last minute...like the day it was due! To this day I still have problems with deadlines...unless it is something I am interested in then it is done right away.
