So im really confused at what is wrong with me. Am i ADHD, bipolar, or a thyroid disorder? Can i possibly be all three, or two, maybe just one of those? Then i think maybe im just crazy. Ive had different doctors testing me or all of those, and no doctor has given me the same "diagnosis". Im afraid im never going to know whats wrong with me if anything, when i am given different verdicts. Bipolar runs in my family not sure about adhd but i took an online test i know its not accurate but it did tell me i have a very high score and adhd is highly likley. The tyroid disorder was brought on because i had just given birth to my son and i was told i have an overactive thyroid, but it may just be because i had recently given birth. My grandmother has graves disease an my mom is bipolar. My dad also had schizophrenia and passed away from cancer 8 years ago when i was 13. I dont really know if that has a factor in this because i have no signs of schizophrenia but just throwing that in there. I dont know whats wrong with me or what to do, i was also diagnosed with social anxiety and i know for a fact that i have that.....can there be more wrong with me...or am i paranoid?

please help, Ashley
Thanks for this!

Hi fellow penguin! First of all, you are not paranoid sounding at all. In the past I too have been run through the ringer with various "esteemed and educated" doctors of various specialties, presenting with the same symptoms to each of them and coming out with several different diagnosis. The experience is... unfortunately not that uncommon. And frustrating. But whatever you do, do NOT give up.

Lets break this down:
1) It is possible to have ADHD and also other disorders/diseases. It is also possible to be misdiagnosed.

2) My father also has schizophrenia and neither me nor my siblings have ever shown symptoms of such. Not everything goes back to what your parents or grandparents have been diagnosed with (although inheritableness is a possibility in some diseases/disorders, it is not a predictor that you have it)

3) Having a thyroid disorder (I'm guessing that some form of hyperactive thyroid is what they diagnosed) that developed due to pregnancy is very telling. This means that even if you currently really do have a hyperactive thyroid/Graves Disease, it MOST DEFINITELY does NOT preclude that you might have ADHD too. ADHD begins developing before age 6. It also means that if you have ADHD the thyroid disorder in your case is not the cause of your ADHD symptoms---- THUS, the ADHD symptoms are caused by ADHD, not the thyroid.

4) Were you diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder too? Bipolar Disorder is often misdiagnosed as ADHD and vice versa because of the overlap.

5) Who diagnosed you with Social Phobia/Social Anxiety? Same guy who diagnosed you as ADHD and Bipolar?

****Bottom line is I think you need to see a new psychotherapist to determine if you have ADHD or anything else, and then let the MD specialists determine if you have a thyroid disorder (simple bloodtest and actually a GP can diagnose that). If you don't have ADHD, then treating the thyroid disorder should alleviate the ADHD-like symptoms. If you have both, then both can be treated. If you have Bipolar Disorder, Social Anxiety/Phobia or anything else, then the psychotherapist can determine the diagnosis and the treatment.
Thanks for this!

Thyroid function can easily be tested for in a lab, by a GP doc.
In 4 out of 5, ADHD is combined with one ore more disorders like anxiety, bipolar and several others.
ADHD has probably been there all the time.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Get the blood work to test thyroid levels and see a pdoc for possible diagnosis.

Yep, they said it. First get you blood tested for thyroid problems. That should be part of the dx procedure for ADHD anyway.
Once you get that excluded you can continue the diagnostic procedure to determine if there is more going on.
On the add forum I visit and help mod I often find that many people have a difficult time getting diagnosed. And sometimes the docs will experiment for a long time with various med setups until they find the right combo. Its happened that someone has been prescribed anti depressant meds without result until they tried an ADHD specific med which turned their life around.

Too bad with those antidep experiments!
Tell the pdoc carefully about how you experience the mess. Be well prepared and bring screenings. I wish you help as soon as possible.
The ususal prctice is to stabilize one disorder at the time.
Lucky me got the rest fixed at first attempt with a mood stabilizer.

IMHO
the way i figured it out was first, what others said, to have a thyroid function test. mines a little hypo so am on meds for it, but it didn't explain anything and didn't override any MI).

As far as ADHD, if i take anything even remotely resembling "speed", even caffeine or energy drinks, i climb up every tree on the block, it didn't have the result of calming me down like ADHD meds do...was just the opposite.

then, even tho the anti-depressants when first dx'd with depression helped, i still got manic (who tells the docs tho when you're high on life and feeling great?! altho switching jobs, spending money u don't have, moving every year, traveling and wondering why the heck u did that...<sigh>). i finally found a great pdoc that caught the bipolar disorder as opposed to the anti-d causing mania (some--the SSRIs?--do) and put me on an antipsychotic for the mania. (i have to have the anti-d...the lows are too deep into the abyss.)

there's also a mix of anxiety, PTSD and d.i.d. in this ole head too, so i also take a benzodiazepine (valium) for my "nerves" when things get too tense or stressful.

i still have mood swings but not so wild, and i have my pdocs ok to raise my seroquel as needed at those times (please, do not try this at home!)

anyway, (should have just said this to begin with!) a good pdoc can tell, and do the right tests, maybe have your reg doc do the thyroid blood work or pdoc can order it?, and the pdoc can give you written tests to rule out other disorders, as well as being a good listener to pick up what's really going on.

just my experience (took several years, but that's what finally came out of it all), i hope this helps you.
