I was just recently diagnosed with ADHD.

I'm so ashamed. My IQ is very low. I knew I was stupid, but seeing it on paper was pretty horrifying.

I feel like I don't understand 99% of what I hear/read.

Anyone else?

The fact that you can't understand what you hear or read is the ADHD not iq. IQ tests are stupid anyways all it tells you is what amount of information you can absorb. My IQ is 127 apparently and i still have trouble in 99% of things.

The low IQ test could actually be because of the ADHD not that you're stupid. I don't see why they even make people do IQ tests anyways if the diagnosis will always end up as ADHD.

IQ tests are way overrated. I'm with Alonewithmy cat. EQ (emotional intelligence) tests are a much better predictor of intelligence. I have heard this in a number of sources.

Maybe you were tired, anxious, and like the people above said, ADHD can make it look lower than what it is before treatment.

I have no idea what my IQ is, but I will say that being smart isn't the be all & end all. There are plenty of people who are absolutely brilliant at one thing or another, but that doesn't mean they're happy, and it doesn't mean they're good people. It's only one quality and one part of your personality.

And like other commentators said, IQ is a very limited study of intelligence. IMO there are many different kinds of intelligence, like emotional intelligence. Having a low IQ score doesn't make you a bad person, and it doesn't even mean you aren't smart.

Umm - your posts really don't sound like someone with a low iq. I don't think you could run spelchek that good if it were true! IQ tests are measured over time, so if your ADHD slows you down, it could look like you had a lower iq than you actually do. Plus people have different learning styles. To really remember stuff, I have to write them down.

I was going to say the same thing.

Albert Einstein - "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

When I was a child, I had an IQ test done and they thought that I was mentally retarded. Years later, I ended up taking calculus and physics courses and doing just fine in them. I don't know how they expect children to sit through those things let alone anyone with the inability to concentrate.

For you, it was the ADHD. Having a short attention span can take a huge toll on an IQ test. Having a short attention span or inattention does not make you stupid. IQ tests also seem to forget that everyone is smart in their own way. Some people are smart in math and science. Some people may fail at math and science but they could have great social skills. Maybe someone else is very smart about cooking or saving money. IQ tests do not mean much.

I hope that you feel better soon.

I have never taken an IQ test, but i feel like if you have ADHD, the score you get is not fully accurate. I wouldn't take it to heart what the score was...

One of the smartest people I know is my friend and she is one of the few I can have a real conversation with. She tests horrific on IQ tests though. So I'm pretty sure there are things IQ tests don't measure that I see as intelligence. Also, I test above normal but that doesn't seem to apply to anything in the real world. I mean I have strengths, but I also have incredible weaknesses that are ridiculous, so an IQ test sort of misses those. Personally there are things I value higher than IQ, like creativity. There are creative people of almost any IQ so they are not connected. Other people value compassion over IQ. And so on.

IQ tests are a waste of time. I have never taken one but they do not teach you or tell you anything, especially for someone with adhd. Should ask the test givers if you could take the test once a day for 5 days I bet it would go up and down, just like our minds do with attention. I think iq tests are all subjective.

one more thing to add as others are saying there many forms of intelligence, I have a friend who has adhd and he took a IQ test when he was younger and he tested at Genius level or whatever they call the upper percentile, he is a wonderful writer and very creative, but when I look at him, the skills he has of being a writer/creativity/artistic although awesome are only the skills he has going for him. He has no practical skills whatsoever, he is poor with money, among other things. So having a low IQ means nothing, because he is smart as they come according to the IQ test he took, but when I look at him sometimes, he seems dumb as a rock in other areas. So it is all subjective.

As for me, I am good in other areas, such as connecting with people emotionally, I to have adhd and seem frantic and scattered, my room is a mess, I have no organizational skills. I suck at math, english like they offered in high schools and such. But I am good mechanically, along with automotive electrical, I also seem to have a great skill set in listening and understanding people and I seem to be able to read through people who are having a tough and can usually help them out. I dunno really how to describe the last one to well, I just seem to be able to get in tune with people really well, I have been able to since I was a child.

So really all in all is you have to find out what your good at and shove everything else aside as it means nothing to you and will just get in your way and bog you down! It is tough but it can be done slowly a bit at a time.
Thanks for this!
