Hi,
I'm 21 years old. Me and my fiancé have decided to start trying to conceive. I have read about ADHD meds being bad for an unborn fetus. I'm extremely worried about stopping my meds though. They help keep me awake and keep my attention under better control. I can't believe how I will cope being off of my meds. I've heard of Intuniv which is a non-stimulant med for ADHD, but I'm not sure how that will work or if it's healthy for an unborn fetus. I have made an appointment to see my psychiatrist about my meds. Has anyone out there heard about Intuniv? And does it seem to work okay? Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have no experience with it. But I think your best bet is to talk to your psychiatrist and see what they advise.

Montanan,
Thankyou! (: Maus, Yes, that's what I plan on doing when I go to my psych on the 16th.

There are different classifications. If u google intuniv, it should say what class it. According to the FDA, it is a class B medication, meaning studies have shown that no harm was done to the unborn fetus. But I would definitely talk to your pdoc.

Miswimmy,
Thanks. Hopefully I can take that. I didn't do so well without my meds before and I have to go back to school in the fall. I will definitely talk to my pdoc on the 16th. I'll see what she has to say.

My pdoc had me try a supplement that has shown promise with ADD, SAM-e. If you can tolerate the gastrointestinal stuff that comes along with taking a high does (1600mg a day) that could be an alternative for you.

I hope your p-doc can steer you clear of any problems. Has your fiance seen you off meds? Is this something you are both prepared to handle, a child with these problems?
Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I have no end to the heart-ache my s/o passed onto our child ... ADD with or without meds is just hard if you don't have it yourself. Don't hate me for telling my side ...

angustios,
That sounds good. I am Bipolar as well though and I've read that that can be bad for Bipolar people. I'll ask my pdoc about it though. NWgirl, It's okay. I understand and thanks for telling me your side. Yes, he has seen me off my meds and I'm not terrible, but I just get spacey and tired. I'm prepared to handle these problems. I know that it is a possibility that my child will have these problems as well. I hope that she/he doesn't, but it is a possibility.
