I started having severe difficulties concentrating about 6 years ago, along with other cognitive problems. I'm just SO scatterbrained and can't make myself focus for very long on anything. I miss details of things that go on around me because I'm so sensory overloaded all of the time that I think I just tune out a lot of details. It is so frustrating. I had ALL day today to write 5 articles I needed to write for work, and I only wrote half of one. I just can't make myself sit still and do anything for very long. I'm going to get fired because I can't make myself work.
I went to a psychiatrist a few months ago, and he told me it didn't sound like I had ADD/ADHD. He had me do this test where I was supposed to click the screen when certain numbers appeared, and he said I rocked it. He also said I would have shown symptoms of ADD as a child if I had it and that I wouldn't have made such good grades in college if I had ADD. He said even though he didn't think I sounded like I had ADD, he would let me try something to help me focus anyway, so he put me on Vyvanse. 20 mg didn't do anything. He upped my dosage to 40 mg, and that made me go days without getting any sleep, which only made my focus worse, so I stopped taking that. A few weeks later, my GP gave me samples of Strattera to try. That had the opposite effect of the Vyvanse. It made me sleep on and off all day long, like I would fall asleep about 15 times a day and would have the scariest dreams.
Is it worth seeking out a different attention medication, or are my experiences pretty good evidence that ADD meds just aren't what I need?
