Hi, I am 21 years old and believe I could possibly have ADHD. Since I was little in school I always have had trouble retaining information and have had low motivation and focus. I would daydream in class and zone out when a teacher would start a talking lesson. A few teachers mentioned this to my parents. When i was handed a worksheet I would have to read the directions numerous times before I could understand them, sometimes it would take 10 or more minutes. I have always had low grades and barely passed my classes. While talking to someone i understand what they are saying but as soon as i talk to someone else or do a different task I forget what I even talked to the person about. My mom tells me to do things like take the trash out or clean the kitchen and I agree to do it but forget what she told me to do as soon as she walks away. Its like people tell me things and its in one ear then out the other. Now I am out of school but cant keep a job. I lost 3 jobs because I wasnt learning anything they were teaching me and they got frustrated and let me go. I cant do anything for more then 30 minutes without getting bored and doing something else. Reading, playing instruments, doing yard work, watching tv, are just some examples of things i cant focus on. I have always had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep for more then 3 hours. I fidget a lot and shake my legs, and in class could never sit still, especially around people i didnt feel comfortable around. I have always been quiet and i know for sure I have social anxiety. I believe it is partly because when i am in a social group i get very uncomfortable because I cant stop fidgeting and i am afraid people are staring at me because i cant sit still.

I went to a psychiatrist for the first time in my life a week ago and told him all of this, he told me i sounded like i had some adhd symptoms but anxiety too. He said maybe i couldnt focus because of the social anxiety but i feel this is not the case. I believe i have social anxiety because I cant focus or stay still. He told me starting out on 2 meds is not a good idea so he gave me zoloft 50mg. I have been taking it for a week and the side effects are terrible. I cant sleep but still feel extremely fatigued and tired. I have headaches all the time and worse social anxiety then ever. I feel like I am always on the edge, which is something i felt before but only in uncomfortable social or work situations. My focus is worse and motivation at an all time low. My leg also shakes constantly now, its like im wired but i also have extreme lethargy. I cannot live with these side effects. I am considering stopping the zoloft before i get withdraw symptoms, i dont feel like i am depressed and am scared to take ads because i know they have horrible withdraw symptoms and they eventually stop working. The side effects starting the drug are terrible, i cannotneven fathom how bad i will feel if i keep taking it and try to get off of it. They are also not a permenant solution.

I was considering trying to get a stimulant instead because I have tried them before with great results. I could focus and do something for hours and not lose motivation, remember little bits of info and talking to people was a breeze, i could actually initiate conversation with people. I feel normal on a stimulant and motivation is great, i can get many tasks done. I am skeptical though, my worry is growing a tolerance to them and them being ineffective. I heard stories of them also giving people depression when they didnt take them. Like zoloft, they dont seem like a permenant solution but i believe it might be worth a try.

My questions: Does any of this sound like adhd or am i just stupid and have social anxiety? Should i stop the zoloft before i get addicted to it? i feek like ads arent for me.

Can you ask another psychiatrist or doctor about your symptoms and concerns? I would get a second opinion from another professional. Never been on Zoloft, but it sounds like common side effects of SSRIs. The side effects might resolve on their own the longer you take it.

I can but i will have to wait at least a month before i can see another doctor. I will keep trying the zoloft and see what happens.

My primary doctor just told me today that symptoms of ADHD can actually be caused by underlying anxiety and or depression, which isn't surprising. Is Zoloft the first antidepressant you have been on? Did the stimulants calm you down more than "hype" you up?

Zoloft is the first antidepressant i havr ever been on. The stimulants calm me down a bit and make my thoughts more clear. Less fidgety too.

In people with ADHD stimulants tend to calm them down more and the opposite generally happens with those who don't suffer from ADHD. Antidepressants usually start out with you feeling funny. I hope that you're feeling better now.

Are you significantly depressed?

If not, you may have ADHD.

You probably should see a doctor that specializes in ADHD. Unfortunately many mainstream psychiatrists dismiss ADHD.

Social anxiety is VERY common in ADHD.

However if you have significant depression or generalized pronounced anxiety then these may actually be the main problem.

But you seem to think they are secondary.

When stimulants are used as prescribed in recommended doses, their effects usually are persistent long term. They are not an effective treatment for depression however.
