Hello everyone,
I was diagnosed ADD a couple of months ago. Doctor prescribed Ritalin, but this medication made me anxious and rebound was terrible(unable to sleep, heavy pounding heart). Then, I was put on dextroamphetamine and works really good. Motivation, focus and energy were all improved. It helps with the symptoms. However, I do not like to be stimulated all the time. And enjoying a good meal and good sleep at night are not possible. I find the peripheral effects really annoying. Then there are risks associated with this drug. I know the dosage is low, but still I feel that it is damaging the body. So I figured to cease medicating. This has proven to be more difficult than expected. I slept 16 hours a day the first few days. My body was very itchy and I couldn't think clearly. Luckily, these withdrawal effects subsided after a few days, but then I got really strong cravings and it scares me. I hate to be dependent on any type of drug. It drove me to get rid of it all, because I don't trust myself enough with this. Anyway, being sober never felt so great. However, I lack the motivation to do anything that I deem useless and a waste of time. But that's something I need to deal with on my own. I'm curious if anyone deals with symptoms on their own. Have you maybe been going to therapy? Anyone else that thinks that medication is not a long-term solution? I want to make it clear that I do not criticise people that take medication. Everyone deals with it differently and whatever works, works. Feel free to comment and criticism is always welcome of course. Take care. |

I've gotten the impression from the Actually ADHD blog that most will manage well with meds, but that it's very important to learn strategies to get by without them. Just like with something like depression, many folks (like me, I suspect) need them in the beginning just to help them set up a system/routine/what-have-you, but then once they have that down, you can let go of the meds and kind of manage from there. I hope that you will experience that kind of success with going off treatment, Nitefall. That same blog has a page specifically for alternative treatments to medication. They mention it a lot, but I'm sorry I can't find it at the moment. You'll probably come across a link to it eventually if you skim through their posts or tags.
