The 1st thing you need to do is find a therapist that has experience with ADD/ADHD in adults. You don't need a psychiatrist to be diagnosed since they are expensive. But you may need one later if meds are involved with your treatment plan. A good psychologist with experience with adult ADD/ADHD is you best route. Since you don't have insurance but do have a job you may find one that works on a sliding scale. If you feel that you do have ADD you also want to educate yourself on the disorder. There is a lot of good info here on PsychCentral. The more you know about it will help you understand your behavior or actions. There are a lot of people that don't have ADD that will make claims about its existence, or try to put fear in to you about meds. But it is very important that you research ADD and educate your self. A true ADD diagnoses takes several hours over several appointments. Just because someone shows a symptoms of ADD doesn't mean they may actually have it.
There are other disorders that have some of the same symptoms of ADD so to make sure you are not misdiagnosed a good therapist will take their time in make the correct diagnoses. You may want to explore options with Obamacare, you may meet the standards to get cheaper premiums. But the key to knowing if you really have ADD or not is getting connected with a medical professional that is knowledgeable and experienced with adult ADD .
To many people are associated with the wrong people that have little to no knowledge of ADD and it makes it very difficult to get proper treatment. But you really need to educate your self. I will get together the many resources that will be alot of help, such as books and websites. And post them later.
