Hi all - I'm new here. I've had ADD as long as I can remember - finally gave in and got diagnosed at 45 because I have felt like my life is completely out of control for several years now, and I also either have Binge Eating Disorder or my ADD causes me to binge (same result either way), so I've gained a bunch of weight. I started Vyvanse 3 days ago, and have been reading a lot about it and the possibility that I will become tolerant and need a higher dose. I would like to avoid that, especially because I am afraid I will eventually max out the dosage and it will stop working, which I something I have seen other people saying happened to them.

I wondered if I can reduce the chance of tolerance by taking this every other day instead of every day? Or is a day not enough time off? Alternately, I thought about being on 3 days, off 3 days. Does anyone have experience with this and can give advice? I'm afraid to tell the doctor I don't want to take it every day, because I don't want her to think I'm not compliant or something and take me off it - Just the first few days have been mind-blowing. I actually feel like a normal person who can carry out normal household tasks and do my stuff at work without zoning out or walking away from my desk out of boredom. And I haven't even thought about binging. I'd love some input. Thanks!

Hello fairyfeathers: I'm sorry I cannot address your particular concerns. Hopefully there will be other members, here on PC, who can. However I noticed this is your first post. So... welcome to PsychCentral! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit. May I suggest you introduce yourself to the general membership over on our New Members Introductions forum? Here's a link:

You mentioned you recently started taking Vyvanse & have been reading quite a bit about it. So perhaps additional reading is not something that will be of interest. However, just in case, here are links to some articles from PsychCentral's archives on the subjects of ADHD & Vyvanse... the first by our host, Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D:

Welcome to psych central

Th only advice I have for your is that if you have been prescribed medicine that you take it as directed. Playing around with Meds can be a dangerous game. Taking a stimulant everyday could have you bouncing up and down. It’s always tempting to get caught up in the internet, but it’s better to listen to your doctor.

DO NOT binge on the stuff. That's first and foremost, because binging on stimulants and staying awake for extended periods often leads to temporary psychosis. Though, you said you're not so perhaps I don't need to say that. Just don't "save up" for three days and then stay up 24 hours a day for the three days you take it. That would be a disastrous idea and very well may result in stimulant psychosis, but if you just want to not take it for a few days out of the week........ it could be fine depending on your specific circumstances. But there's a possibility that your Dr. feels there is a specific reason why you need it each day with no days off. Though, many people do take days off from ADHD meds, myself included.

In short, there's a good chance that your Dr. would say that it's fine to take days off from it, but you need to ask your Dr. first. Just to make sure that there wasn't a specific reason why he wanted to make sure that you take it daily as opposed to only on work days. Because there's really no way to know for sure without first asking your Dr.

If you and your doctor find your therapeutic dose and you take it as prescribed....tolerance doesn’t develop quickly, IMO. Sometimes people feel their med isn’t working...it still is if their symptoms are controlled, there’s simply no euphoria or speedy feeling. That’s very temporary.

Some people want to take their ADHD meds daily as there is no “holiday” from the condition. However, I’ve heard some doctors are OK with breaks.

As the above poster said, taking as directed and not binging is really important.
