I was diagnosed with adult ADHD about three years ago. I have been on Adderall XR ever since. I have had a love/hate relationship with the med. The loves include that it gives me energy and makes me feel good. At times it helps with focus and performance. The bad is that I feel it really affects my willpower and self control. I have gained a bunch of weight, spend money like it is on fire, and started using tobacco after many years off. I feel this progression is getting worse and it worries me. My Dr. suggested switching to strattera because it does not affect dopamine. I am on board for this (or other options), but am worried about the transition. I have been without the Adderall for a day or 2 at times and was very very groggy. I am a teacher who is starting school soon, and over the summer am an online college course evaluation and am swamped at the moment. I feel I only have a couple days over next weekend to do the switch even though my daughters have a birthday party to prep for. Any advice or experiences? Thank you!

Have you considered another amphetamine like dexedrine? Adderall contains levoamphetamine which can sometimes cause the issues you mention. Dex is just plain amphetamine,

Strattera is what my doctor or nurse practitioner suggested. She doesn’t have a whole lotta expertise and I live in a small town With no other options. I will definitely mention it to her, because I like the stimulant. I don’t like and the false euphoria that the Adderall is causing. I will definitely look that one up.

Can you taper off the Adderall while you ramp up on the Straterra?
