Gotta get a doctor's referral, make a million phone calls, check with your insurance company, get on a waiting list over 18 months long, meanwhile your therapist says "you definitely have ADHD" but her opinion doesn't matter and she won't help you out until you get the official diagnosis.
But to get a bipolar diagnosis all you have to do is walk into the clinic and ask for an evaluation and get a 30 minute chat that day, then boom, you have a code in your file that says you can get help for that problem. __________________ Live life for nothing but that sweet sweet melody. |

ADHD diagnosis and treatment is BIG business. If you dont believe me go interview a doctor at a college infirmary. Go on one of those internal school "chat servers" and "anonymous" school message boards and count how many students are selling their adderall. A thorough evaluation should be done by an experienced psychiatrist ( a psyche, not the assistant, therapist, nurse etc.) I say that not because those I mentioned suck or dont know what they are talking about, I say that because long term treatment and medication is expensive and insurances love to deny coverage and then ask for all kinds of second opinions. Starting out with a psyche at least preps you for what you will have to do anyway. Snake oil salesmen dont just limit their nonsense to tinctatures and potions. Yes their are clinics and thousands of "experts". But isnt it so interesting that all of these experts and docs and labs etc are not covered or barely covered? ADHD has many treatment theories and options. The soup du jour now is no "dangerous" meds (which I have so much research on I could make your head spin), dietary - no sugar, no gluten, no dyes, no dairy, that whole " gut health" movement, "Brain supplements" ( i've seen a million commercials for Prevagen and Neuriva). There is no clinical backing of an adhd diet. Stimulants are a first line treatment with roughly a 70% (greater IMO) success rate. Of course its not the only option. My 3 kids, husband and myself all have ADHD and we all have had different treatment courses. I will stop yammering. I used to mod an active (no more) ADHD forum. Send me a pm anytime. __________________ "I carried a watermelon?" President of the no F's given society. |

Myself and hubby and all 3 children have adhd. I learned how to fight the system and advocate with my first child. I knew how to play the game and no one messed with me after that. In fact I was an advocate for local parents and their kids- I used to joke that the reason the director of special services retired early is because she didnt want to see my face at anymore child study team meetings!
