I was diagnosed as a child in the 70's. My foster parents didn't think medication was necessary. Fast forward to the current era. I tried non stimulant medicine and hated the way I felt. My creativity, my get-up-and-go had got up and left. I discontinued the medicine. While there are aspects of my ADD that I can be mindful of there are so many other parts of this diagnosis that have become part of me. Things that could have been worked on earlier in life. My husband will point out traits that I never even thought about but apparently are troublesome. He is astounded that some of these so called negative traits don't even cross my radar.
So, at this point in my life when many of these traits are so ingrained is there any hope that any medication can help? |

Welcome to MSF @WitchInCasper - I am sorry you have challenges with ADD. I find with myself that I am blind to many of the things I suffer from because I am habituated to them and accept them as the way things are.
There are ADD support groups and therapists but I am not sure how much those would help. The only way to get good reliable advice on medication is to talk to a psychiatrist and see if they think it is justified trying meds. A lot may depend on how disruptive these traits are. Is your husband just being picky or are there serious consequences from the symptoms you have? Are there other people you can safely ask like family about how much they notice symptoms and how alarming are they? Partners are not the most reliable guides because they often see all the faults you have which can mean that you are not acting the way they want you to act. They will never be satisfied because their expectations are usually so unrealistic. I think it depends on what you're looking for. I started Ritalin recently just being diagnosed at 28, and I will say it's made things soo much easier. They're not really a treatment "for ADHD" but they do help me focus and calm me down. I do have trouble with sitting with boredom, impatience, and time management/time blindness still though. I'm not exactly sure which traits your referring to, but some symptoms are pretty easily treated although I feel like certain "traits" could be behaviors that we learn to deal with the symptoms that might be more engrained.
