Sad times.. i just got dx'd as ADHD. Fantastic. i needed another dx like i needed a hole in my head.

ok.. that aside, i know nothing about ADHD except that i am now on ritalin.

Can anyone point me to the best one-stop resource? i really don't want to read a lot of frilly stuff or whatever.. just get to the meat of what this is, why, what i can do.

cheers

Don't feel too bad about being newly diagnosed. Now that you know you have ADHD, you can actually treat the symptoms of it. You have a name to go along with the symptoms that are interfering with your life.

I encourage you to try changing doses and try different medications if you find the Ritalin isn't working for you or has too many side effects. There is a large myriad of different kinds of drug treatments for ADHD symptoms, and don't forget that a good therapist with skill in treating adult ADHD is really helpful (if you don't already see a therapist).

I haven't found any resource for us adults that is comprehensive or "best" in a helpful sense, but I've found a few online ones that are not bad.

CHADD-Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
-a not bad online resource:
http://www.chadd.org/
The National Resource Center on ADHD (a program of CHADD):
http://www.help4adhd.org/
For strategies in coping with ADHD, this link is good:
http://www.helpguide.org/mental/adhd...strategies.htm
Understanding adult manisfestations of symptoms of ADHD:
http://www.helpguide.org/mental/adhd...t_symptoms.htm
Decent descriptive page from a Canadian L.D. website:
http://www.ldac-taac.ca/InDepth/adhd_07-e.asp
A slightly more "academic" article (written for GP's) but has good info.:
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20001101/2077.html
Decent article on how various medications work on ADHD brains:
http://www.baltimorepsych.com/Stimulants.htm
A little ADHD humor:
http://www.addresources.org/article_adhd_humor.php
Good letter turned into an article by an "older" ADHD lady:
http://www.addresources.org/article_..._zimmerman.php

Education is one of the best things you can do.

Welcome to the world of ADHD. You might consider surfing back a bit on this forum. I found some of the previous posts helpful when I was just starting looking into this condition.

I am a firm believer that as difficult as it is sometime to manage this condition, we are like this for a reason. The world benefits from people like us-- don't for get that. If we learn to channel our energy we can accomplish a lot that others just don't have the stamina for. Quality management involve not just trying to get rid of our symptoms, it about also finding ways to maximize our abilities.

I agree. I seem to have certain... gifts, so to speak, that non-affected people without ADHD don't seem to have. If we are in control of our ADHD (as opposed to our ADHD controlling US), then we can maximize the benefit we get from the gifts of ADHD.
