Is anyone taking this med? If so, what has your experience been on it? It was prescribed for my son this week and it's like he is on speed. Talking a mile a minute, very emotional, didn't sleep at all last night. The doc says this will only last for a few days, but it's sort of freaking us out... He was only recently diagnosed with ADHD so this is our first experience with a stimulant for him.

I took Vyvanse for a month. I personally did not care for it. I seemed to work alright for almost a week, but I became progressively more agitated and emotional. I also noted a severe decrease in efficacy and became unmotivated and "dazed". I am trying not to discourage you in the slightest, since everyone's body reacts differently. In my case, I am a 30 year old female and have been on stimulant medication, with a breaks here and there, since 3rd grade. Although, I have heard more adverse reactions in relation to the adult population, I have seen a great deal more success regarding the adolescent population. I hope you and your son figure out which medication is the best fit. Good luck to you both! |

Yes, I have been taking Vyvanse for almost two months (I am an adult). It is my first stimulant. I find it very helpful. It does not come on with a jolt, it is very gradual after taking it. I don't feel like I am coming on to it or coming off of it. It wears off very gradually. I take 30 mg per day in the morning. I remember the first few days were more intense and I felt more wired and had a bit of trouble sleeping, but these effects went away. It has never made me more emotional. But it does make me feel more up, and it helps me focus and stay on task. It also helps me not fall asleep during the day, which was a big problem for me.
Good luck with your son.

This is strictly my unprofessional opinion...I think your son is on too high a dose, and the undesirable effects are unlikely to go away if the dose is not changed.
I'm 40 and I take 70mg of Vyvanse a day for depression and fatigue. I've been on it for months and it is as strong as when I started it. Not to be alarmist, but Vyvanse essentially IS speed--it breaks down into dextroamphetamine. I think it's a very good med, but it is pretty easy to take too much. But it may be a huge help to your son at a lower dose. Good luck! |
