Ok it is that time of the year... again..... ugggggg .... when the company has the big party. I work for a smaller company, thankfully it is IT and many of us do not do well socially. Me... I am always trying to hide in the bathroom. I have even been known to take some movement medication in order to ensure the manditory time there has a valid bathroom excuse! But that is a risky option when the number of bathrooms are limited.

So anyone here have any tips on how in the heck to make it through three or so hours of mandated social exposure?

the last work holiday party I attended (also IT) everybody pretty much just sat there like a bump on a log. I stuck out because i did go from table to table. it was not appreciated and I was fired shortly after. sit there, eat, drink, speak when spoken to, get paid, and go home. happy holidays
Thanks for this!

I'm dreading my hoilday snack day too. We have about 65 people in my department. It can get pretty intense to say the least.
Thanks for this!

I'm lucky I can just opt out. They have it during the work day and just set up tables and have food. People wander around and eat. I just either avoid all the crowds and stay at my desk or get my food after/before everyone has arrived. then retreat to my seat.

Best thing to do to make it through a party is to find a nerdy person or an introvert, get yourselves some coffee, and go to a corner and talk. Ignore the rest of the party. One-on-one is always more interesting anyhow.

I didn't go to my office Xmas party this year. My excuse was that I'd had a really hard week at work (I had!) and I was just too tired. The actual truth was that I just couldn't face being in a room full of people for that length of time. And, yes, I got a lot of flack about it from my work colleagues the next day.

I have an app on my iphone which slows down my breathing rhythm. I use it all the time to try to calm myself down if I know I'm going into a stressful social situation. Seems to be effective for me...
