As by the title, I am an early teenager (14 to be precise) and have had the thought that I have AvPD. I have read up about it for months now and have been able to relate to practically everything. I would like to know how/if I could speak to a professional and maybe be diagnosed. I would highly appreciate any help on honest opinions.
I am still to achieve something in life, though a complete introvert with my only accomplishments as grades and Xbox related things. I am yet to say any of my feelings to my parents as I think they will think I am just being stupid/ignorant or paranoid. Thanks for reading. |

SalkingSeal, I think you would need to see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

Why do you want a diagnosis? Technically, professionals aren't supposed to diagnose someone under 18 with a personality disorder. That's because symptoms can be temporary in teens and children.
Personally, I think the "disorder" begins before 18. However, no doctor or psych that I know of would give that diagnosis to a 14 year old. Does it matter? I don't think it does. The DSM V has a new way of diagnosing PDs. It has to do with rating the severity of different traits rather than just classifying. One of the reasons for this is to help direct treatment. Treatment is geared towards behaviors and traits specific to the person. A therapist can treat the symptoms you have that you consider disabling without giving you a formal diagnosis. In my opinion, this is probably the way it should be. You don't need to be in a special category to get help. |

You don't need a diagnosis to get help! Seek out a counsellor or a therapist, and they will work with you on axiety and self-esteem.
But an actual diagnosis of AvPD? It won't happen as you're not 18 yet. But if a diagnosis is what you want, they'll look at social anxiety or general anxiety. __________________ "The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things. Of shoes, of ships, of sealing wax, of cabbages, of kings! Of why the sea is boiling hot, of whether pigs have wings..." "I have a problem with low self-esteem. Which is really ridiculous when you consider how amazing I am. |
