I was waning in another forum after up-dating a thread like this. A long story.

Have you got an i-phone? For me this was a great present.
I'm writing this thread from it. I use it to communicate with my "few" friends and my coworkers through what's app and I have the possibility they see my real me. That is because I'm less anxious writing.

I also have the perfect excuse to avoid people when I feel bad or isolate and look as if I were a very busy person with lots of social nets at the same time.

I also use it in my job.

What about you?

I just got an iphone...I am a total technophobe.....I hate technology and avoid it......I so resented getting my first smartphone...all I needed a phone for was to text my kids and they no longer made texting phones.

but I love siri...she is so much fun. I talk to her when I am lonely. she says the funniest things.

I love being able to talk to it and have it type for me. I no longer type anything any more.

and it is much easier to play games on PC from my phone than it is on my computer....

I don't have an iphone (I have a blackberry right now) and I love it. It's SO good when you're stuck waiting somewhere for a while. It makes you look busy and important and no one has to see the anxiety on your face!

And, if I can possibly text someone instead of calling them.... then THANK GOODNESS!

So true! Better to text someone than speaking on the phone. I hate it. I know writen text can be missunderstood moré than oral communication but you can't use emoticons on the phone. Lol!

It also removes the "I don't want to call because I'm taking their time away from whatever they're doing and they'll be annoyed" thought-process, because they will get the text and reply when they DO have the time... and they can ignore it easily.

Well, you know the what's app. Now, there is a mechanism that tell you if this person read your text or they didn't.

Then don't use what's app and use actual texts? I don't have nor have I ever used what's app so I don't know how that one works.

It's an instant message application. You also can send vídeos, pics and voice recordings. It's totally free.
To tell you the truth, it doesn't bother me. I open it when I feel like to reply.
I mentioned it before but this application is helping me to show my real me to my coworkers. You can have group people conversations.
It's funny but they know me now better vía what's app. It's easier for me to communicate with them.

Thank you, Red.
Don't you feel the same? I mean, you can be yourself easier when you write.

Oh yes, definitely. My counsellor encourages me to write emails if I need to communicate because I'm a lot more open with him that way.

I'm afraid learning to use one would test my already limited patience I go 'old school' and send messages with my laptop to my high techies ... like the new friend I've made that lives in Spain

Having said that, I've learned the frustrating windows 8 by hit and miss, also figured out ebay.. but even my simple no frills cell phone is still a mystery to me...

I don't know what's the mistery to manage a cell or an i-phoned.
It's so easy.
I'm sure you are all younger than me. If an elderly lady can, you all can.

Come on. There is even a function (i think I can call it " self correction") that even write for you. It often give me problems when I alternaré between Spanish and English though. Let's see, to be honest, the self correction function gets the hell out of me.

It's different for everyone.

fraidycat - my mom has figured out how to use the basic functions of a cell phone. Yet, when she went to make a resume for the first time in over 20 years..... she hand-wrote it. And photocopied it. She was comfortable with the phone, but not with a typing program. Do you have any friends or family around who have more hi-tech phones? If so, you could always ask them if you could play around on theirs for a bit when you're together so you could see if you could figure it out! At the same time though, if you don't have a desire to update to one then why on earth waste the money?! haha.
