When I started working here in the warehouse at the coal mine I was gung-ho about advancing as soon as possible. So I went out on my own, was a temp and not yet recieving tuition reimbursement benefits, and went back to school part time to get my Apprentice Miner's Certification. I was unsure I'd be able to focus enough or memorize all the terminology and regulations. But the teacher taught to my learning style: Repetition.

Because I was doing it part time and bouncing from class to class, I did not get all the required class hours in, but I absorbed the material like a sponge. When the time came to take the state certification test, it took me less than 10 minutes and I received a score of 95%!

In July I was finally able to complete the required 8 hour underground safety training and was ready to start logging time underground. Once again I was very unsure of myself. Would I be able to take the pressure of life underground? How would my symptoms come into play once I made it down in the mines? How would the reality that I'm under the earth, with 1000 feet of overburden above me capable of collapsing at any moment without warning play on my mind?

The moment of truth came on July 5th 2012, when an very experienced company boss agreed to take me on my first trip into the coal mine. As we stepped onto the platform of the man hoist that would lower us over 900 feet down into the earth, I swallowed the lump in my throat and clicked on my cap light. The ride down was in complete darness surrounded by for walls of concrete and I began to get rather nervous. But as we cleared the coping the incandescent lights glowed of a light at the end of the tunnel.

As the mouth of the mine came into view a smirk crawled across my lips. All my fears and anxieties left me immediately and the only thing running through my mind was, "This is frickin awesome!" And my love of underground time began.

I have now almost completed my 6 months of required time and only have 39 out of the 108 required shifts remaining. After acquiring the required number of shifts, I can then take the state Permanent Miner's Certification test. I will then be eligible for full time underground employment, a significant pay increase and a job more closely matched with the training I received in college.

A hell of an accomplishment coming from 2009, not even able to find the motivation to get out of bed to go to work or class, to holding a good job and working more than I really should.

Don't mean to gloat, but I'm damned proud of what me, myself, and I have pulled off in the past 4 years!

The union is trying the file a grievance against me now, saying I'm not spending enough time underground for it to count toward a shift. This is why I hate people...

2 to go!

Should finish up with my shifts this week, get my paperwork signed and notarized and schedule the test Monday, test Tuesday or Wednesday, and barring any major screwups, pass the test and get my certification.

Exciting stuff!
