Second night in. First night, it took over three hours to fall asleep, then I only woke up when my phone rang at one pm. I had one of the worst headaches ever. Tonight, it's almost been five hours since I took trazadone. I'd been only sleeping every other night for about a month. It looks like I'm right back there. I suppose I go through this almost every year, a period of severe insomnia around January through March. I used to have trouble sleeping on Seroquel. This sucks

Sorry, SS, I am right there with you. Trazodone never worked for me. Nothing med-wise does.

I swear it's activating. I never felt that wide awake all night before, except when I was full manic. Uh oh...

I found trazodone to be activating, too. I had to stop it because I was getting manic from lack of sleep (and possibly from the drug itself). Remeron worked pretty well for getting me to get to sleep if that's something you haven't tried yet.

Oh--there is no doubt some of these "sleep meds" are activating in some patients. None.

Trazodone gave me extremely dry mouth and sinuses.

I've never taken Trazodone before, but it made my grandma manic while she was in IP. She was talking a mile a minute, hallucinating, pacing, not sleeping, etc.. She was also delusional as hell. She had dementia on top of that, but the IP doctors were confident she was experiencing a manic episode, so they took her off it immediately. She eventually stopped the pacing, got more sleep, and calmed down with the talking after starting Geodon and Depakote, and being off the Trazodone for a week.
I'm not entirely surprised my grandma had this reaction to Trazodone, as Trazodone is an AD and ADs are just plain bad for some people. My grandma is no longer alive, though. She became a vegetable from the dementia. Could no longer eat, drink, move, etc.. But that's irrelevant. |

Trazodone didn’t help me sleep, it actually made me manic

Trazadone not only caused me to stay awake, but I had a weird experience on it. I took the prescribed dose, but instead of falling asleep I experienced flashing colored lights when I closed my eyes and felt like I was passing out. It felt like and overdose. I forced myself to sit up and say my name aloud, over and over, drink water...finally the episode passed. Freaky, and I won't take Trazadone again.

How's it going now? Are you going to try a new med? I was on trazadone for a day. I can't remember symptoms but I didn't seem to need it the next day so not really given it a fair trial. But I'm concerned I might need something again.

Psych meds are on a standstill for the time being, meaning no changes except I stopped trazadone on my own. Check my "new reality, no choice" post for why

Man, these posts aren't encouraging.
Started trazodone last night. Finally fell asleep after 5:00am, and woke up with my head feeling as heavy as a big bag of rocks, and about as dumb. |

Finding the med which works best for each of us is trial and error. You might ask your pdoc if the med might work better in a week than it does right away? if not, you may need a trial on a different med. This med gives me a horrendous headache/hangover. yet, many people take it w/o any intolerable effects. I hope you will find a med which works well for you!

Trazodone is hit and miss for me. Sometimes if I take it about 30 minutes before bed and limit my stimulation it helps. Other times it does nothing at all except maybe gives me weird dreams or makes me sleep deeper.
