I have written a short narrative of my experience with ECT for my psychiatrist to share with her prospective patients. Although it will be printed, at this stage it's just stored as a Google document. You can read it by clicking on the link below.
Narrative: ECT - Google Docs You may wonder about the brevity. You may think, "Isn't there more to say about ECT?" Well, since it's aimed at potential patients, I've taken into consideration the state of mind they would be in at the point where ECT is recommended. They're not going to want to read a book. __________________ >< Last edited by Daonnachd; Nov 21, 2020 at 10:19 AM.. |

I believe it is excellent as is. Your narrative has a soothing, friendly tone to it that is so reassuring.

This is fascinating, and really well written. Thank you for sharing! I always thought that ECT was inhumane, but had that concept challenged by a college friend who had positive results from the treatment. I've learned a lot about trauma responses over the years. I've read that all other animals natural have a natural cathartic shaking response to suffering trauma. They don't shut down their natural responses, but we do.
I wonder if the induced convulsions replicate a natural healing response. Just a thought. Great that you've had positive results with this treatment |

Cheers, @KBMK.
Your description of trauma responses comparing humans with other animals is interesting. __________________ >< |

I've seen NICABM offer some great articles. I'm looking at the "Free Resources" page now. When I have a bit more time I'm going to read Levine's report on what resets the nervous system after trauma.

My only thought for improvement would be to briefly explain how these treatments have offered you greater balance, peace, stability, etcetera. It might be helpful to know what your state was like before going in and what it feels like now that you've had the treatment. That may not be consistent with your goals, but I thought I'd toss it out for consideration. Again, this is excellent and I cannot say enough how important I believe this kind of work is. I say to my therapist often that she cannot fully understand unless she has lived it. You're offering a glimpse of life from the inside. That's invaluable. |

Thank you, @fern46. Your idea of outlining both where I was beforehand and where I am now is excellent. Cheers.

I just remembered that I had forgotten to read your revised version, so I just read it.
It's a bit more formal, a bit less friend-to-friend. Still, the narrative is excellent and will without a doubt soothe the anxieties of many a patient. __________________ |

@BethRags, yeah, it is a bit more formal. Sadly, the parts I felt I could cut were the more conversational phrases and details. I seriously wanted to pare the length down to something a nervous, depressed patient could conceivably get through.
Thank you very much for taking the time to go through it again. __________________ >< |

As a fellow ECT patient - this is really good and I wish I had something like this when I first started treatments. Thank you!

Thank you, @Polibeth, for taking the time to read and respond.
An additional note for all who might be interested: my regular psychiatrist has now asked to have it to give to her patients considering ECT also. __________________ >< |
