I've been on olanzapine since 2012 when I was hospitalized and I've been stable on it, getting the dose down to 2.5 mg nightly. I just started seeing a new psychiatrist in December and she seemed to want me to switch--initially to lamictal and now to Divalproex and maybe even adding prozac. I was resistant to changing it up since I don't want to risk relapse or potential side effects which I can't predict. She seemed to be more concerned about my anxiety during last appointment. Looking back on things, maybe olanzapine isn't the wisest choice long-term but I kind of feel "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know" and so far I have avoided the weight gain and blood sugar highs that seem to be the main complaints with it. I've been away from the forum for a while and don't really have others to discuss this with.

Hi nativechic. Welcome back!
If you can avoid Depakote (divalproex) side effects that will be great. As for its effectiveness, you can't know until you try. It was effective at curbing and preventing my past mania, but not depression. But perhaps you taking an antidepressant will help. Best of luck! |

Personally I wouldn't switch if I was functioning well on the med and wasn't having any troublesome side effects. If I had questions about what either of those mean or knew for sure one or both wasn't up to par I would switch, especially if my pdoc were telling me I should.

I agree with Sapien. Why rock the boat. Also, you could add Lamictal in addition to the olanzapine, since they are for different purposes.

Perhaps talk about your fears with your Pdoc and maybe you will be able to find a solution. Hopefully things will improve soon for everyone. Sending many Safe, warm hugs to ALL of you, @nativechic, your Family, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!

If you're stable on it, I wonder why the pdoc wants you to switch. Did they say?
