I'm training a service dog to do the following:
I'm worried that's to much for a dog to learn? She'll be "owner trained" but I'm getting a trainer too for when we get stuck. I've been told the Service dog is a band aid. Any opinions, questions, things I haven't thought about? Here she is I'm going to use this thread to document her progress. __________________ Dx: Me- SzA Husband- Bipolar 1 Daughter- mood disorder+ Comfortable broken and happy "So I don't know why I'm tongue tied At the wrong time when I need this."- P!nk My blog |

My parents have her for the basics until she's about 7-8 months old. Basically until we get settled with the move. She's learning sit, down, stay, playing in the rain, potty and basic desensitization right now. She's camping, playing with her siblings and getting new situations. Then I'll take her in January (8 months old) and take 2+ years to train her.
She can't start pubic access training until she's 9 months (February) and has passed 12 weeks of training (or tests in). So earliest she'll be able to train in public end of March. I'm trying to convince h to take her to the "brew with your bud class." So she'll have a public access class with me and one with him. She'll learn get h and lead to exit/car first but she'll start that as soon as we get her. It's a 3 month course. She'll need to be 2 years old and have xrays and medically cleared that's when I can train the mobility parts. Pulling things, supporting my weight things like that where she'll need her hips checked. Won't be able to learn: Blocking Sit/stay for stability in/ out of the shower Lead to exit/car Laundry (Put in open washer) Pull trash ( in like a wagon) Carry Groceries Counter balance Until she clears her health check. So she has a long road ahead of her. My parents are so valuable in this first phase. Because without them I'd have to wait about a year to even start this process. I'm going to be going to the classes with her by myself. While doing that my husband will be taking dog trainer classes. We're hoping to tackle this from several sides. It's going to cost about 2k in training the first 8 months we have her and then she may not pass the health check at 2 years old. So it's a big gamble I have lots of hopes for her. __________________ Dx: Me- SzA Husband- Bipolar 1 Daughter- mood disorder+ Comfortable broken and happy "So I don't know why I'm tongue tied At the wrong time when I need this."- P!nk My blog |

So they've decided she hasn't learned enough. She's now 6 month old almost 7 months and they will be taking her to their winter place. So she will be about a year at earliest when/if I get her. Then I have to do all the service training. She's on vet recommended food so I'm paying like $70/month just in food. She's attaching to my mom to the point she wont listen to me or will yelp for her if she's not in view and can't look for her. I'm hoping this is just a puppy stage because I would hate to have to wash her before even trying on our own with her. But maybe it's best. I feel like they are waiting on my other dog to pass to give me her. So her time line has basically been pushed back a year if I don't have to wash her. I'm torn because I'm grateful they're doing this But when I move in to my new place I just want my dog so we can get started on the in depth training already. In my mind she's already behind. I don't know how to tell them that without sounding like a *****. Don't get me wrong they take her to a very expensive vet and pay all those fees. Wants me to keep that vet which is a hard NO. I just don't feel like she's mine and the more time goes on the less I feel like she's mine.

Got the news I will be getting her early February. I hope I have a place by then. I don't think I'll be able to see a psychiatrist by then or even a normal Dr. So I'm my hope is to find a place that allows dogs.
