Is there hope for people with bipolar who self medicate with illicit drugs? My husband has been self medicating for most of his life. He doesn't even believe bipolar is an actual disease.

So, I guess my question would be, what is he medicating himself with? There are very definite wrong things to medicate with.....my nephew who is 36 has been medicating his bipolarism with alcohol and diet pills for years and I doubt he ever has a good day....I, on the otherhand, choose to let the Pdoc tell me how to manage my bipolarism.
Good luck.....sounds like you may need it.

Specifically marijuana and alcohol. He has long referred to marijuana as his "medicine," but only as a joke. He has also used crack cocaine, but that's more to augment his excitement than to modify his moods.

You could explain even if its not a disease there many better ways to deal with it. People can self-medicate due to anger issues, stress, anxiety, etc.
Doesn't matter what it is, there are always contrsuctive ways that help and unconstructive that hurt. |
