For the depression stage? My daughter seems to do better when she uses one, but I am worried about making her manic.

I use a light therapy desk lamp. I believe it works very well if you spend a few 30 min. sessions a day under it. I don't think the light will make her manic, it's not THAT powerful. It is made to do the same thing the sun does; help serotonin re-uptake in the brain and increase endorphin levels. This, at the most, will make her feel elated, but not manic.

It has been recommended to me to use one, I just have never spent the money for one. I would love to, though.

Actually, it could make her manic, but as long as you monitor how long she uses the box, it shouldn't be a problem. I've heard a few people say they had a little problem with that, but it was easily remedied.

Yep, I agree with Farmer. It can make people manic, or at the very least hypomanic. I've never heard of it making someone so manic they needed to be hospitalized, but it can throw her into the other extreme. If she has a pdoc (psychiatrist) they may have ideas on how long and how frequently she should sit in front of it. Hopefully she doesn't have that problem and can just be focused on not feeling depressed.
