So, what do you do when you refuse to take an antipsychotic to squelch the mania due to its poisonous nature, weight-gaining qualities, etc.??? I have had to resort to a little wine just to knock the you know what out of the mania. is that bad? I think not if it is done in moderation. What do you think?

My problem with wine is that I'll try a little bit, but then I start feeling really good so I'll drink some more, and soon I'm drunk and trying to sleep on the toilet. There is no moderation, but YMMW.

I think drinking the occasional glass of wine is fine. Using it to self medicate is worrisome. If antipsychotics scare you, have you tried lithium or depakote? They squelch mania really well.

Using alcohol to self-medicate can really be a problem. Honestly, the meds do a better job and are much more reliable than alcohol. A mood stabilizer or anti-convulsant might even do a better job than an antipsychotic.

Yep, a mood stabilizer is the answer and I am already on one. Unfortunately now and again it does not cover the hypomania or rather it is the breakthrough caused by the antidepressant. My doctor is trying to fine tune this. Thanks for your support!
