So I went to the doctor today because my ear has been bothering me for a few days. It has turned into terrible pain in and around my ear extending all the way down my neck. On top of that, I have conjunctivitis and a stuffy nose.

Well, the anxiety inducing part is that I am going on a plane on Saturday. The doctor told me not to take any decongestant because of the psych meds I am on, and I can't chew gum because I have TMJ and my jaw will get stuck. I can take Tylenol for pain, but that's it. There are ear plugs that are supposed to help, but at the moment just touching my ear is killing me.

She said that it is an inner infection which I guess it deeper than a middle infection.

Last year it was my son who had the ear infection; this year it's me. My youngest has a terrible cold and I am willing to bet he will get an ear infection later this week.

Ugh!

(Selfish rant: With everything I have been through, I will have to lose it if I have to give up my vacation. I NEED this vacation!)
Thanks for this!

Rant away! Talk to your doctor and let him know what is going on and ask if there is anything that you can take to help while your on the plane - it may mean having to go off your meds for a day or so be for your flight. Ask the doc - hopefully he can come up with a med you can take. Best of luck and if your going somewhere warm, take me with!!!! LOL!!!!

That's too bad ((BNL'sMOM)) - lucky you went to the doctor. My older brother had such a serious ear infection, that he lost partial hearing. Did she give you antibiotics? If you're going on the plane - do several big yawns if you can't chew gum.I hope you feel better.

Somewhere that is supposed to be warm; Florida. It has been cool there, but better than the weather here in the Northeast.

I'll see my p-doc on Thursday and she will know better what I can take with my psych meds to make the flight more comfortable.
Thanks for this!

I have a friend whose mom died of meningitis that was caused by an ear infection. I take ear infections very seriously now.

When I was a teenager I had an inner and middle ear infection that ruptured my left eardrum. Your symptoms remind me of my own back then!

The problem was that I needed to go on an airplane to get to the Nationals of the Science Olympiad that week. If I didn't go, the team couldn't go. You need two girls on the team to be eligible...and I was the only person good at biology on the team.

My doctor wrote for some lovely oral narcotics and some heavy duty antibiotics. I got to go on the trip...and when everyone else was literally crying from the pressure in their ears...I was singing and joking around. There should be hope for your trip. You just need a doc who will put some effort into selecting meds for you.

I definiitely have heavy duty antibiotics. I am going to be on 2000mg of amoxocillin for the next 14 days.

I'll take some good old Tylenol, but I don't want to be knocked out oun narcotics for hte flight since I will be responsible for a two year old and 8 year old during the flight. My husband has some Tylenol with Codeine left over from his recent car accident. Maybe I can find out from p-doc if that is safe and won't knock me out.

Maybe some I can find yogurt pops. With that dose of antibiotics, I could use the active cultures.
