What if I go through all the antipsychotics out there? I'm getting close- it seems anyway. Geodon, risperdal, abilify, seroquel....

Ok so I've had 4 of the atypicals and none of the typicals. But aren't the atypicals around because they supposedly have many fewer side effects than the typicals?

I wish they'd work but they seem to be very serious, powerful drugs. I'm already maxed out on lithium per blood tests.

I've tried seroquel, zyprexa, and was on risperdal for 6 years. I'm on abilify now for about 6 weeks. I can't say any of them worked all that well for me; I still suffer, my moods still vary painfully. So I don't think it is the end of the world if you don't find a med in one category to work for you.

Sometimes it depends on the other meds that you are taking and the dosage of said anit-psychotics. I'm on Geodon now, third time around, and it seems to work better this time. Haldol is a great older one. The only bad thing about the older ones, at least for me anyway, is that you tend to sleep forever. It's taken me a long time to find the right med combo, so don't lose hope.

What Moreta says is so true, it does depend too on what it is combined with because sometimes something will get you part of the way there and combined with something else can get you the rest of the way there to control the rest of the symptoms. Combos can do wonders.

I'm on ativan .5 mg and lthium 300 mg. Problem is, my blood tests show I'm at my lithium max.

What are the symptoms you are trying to take care of. It would depend on what you are treating (within bipolar) as to what could work for you.

There are also a bunch of anti convulsants that have powerful anti manic properties...
Also meds work best if they are combined with therapy. Are you in therapy? Do you know your triggers and early warning signs and what helps to calm you down?

Ahh... I live within a few miles of Eli Lilly I am sure that if your insurance will pay for it they will come up with some new med before you run out of options.

Like Skully... just kidding.

I hope that you find the right combo soon. I hate that psychiatry is an art not a true science.

Pdoc called. Wanted me to do lamictal. I said I'd rather not. So we're upping my lithium.

Got the lithium. Hope this works! Having it twice a day instead of once will help even the dose too.
