Just wondering...
Is anxiety actually anything to do with bipolar, or is it because of the depression that comes with bipolar, or is it just something that some people will have and some people wont?

Hi widgets! I think anxiety can be many different things for many people. Anxiety is my primary disorder and my primary diagnosis. For me it's a condition in and of itself and everything else is secondary to it.

For other people anxiety is secondary to depression. Definitely anxiety is a common Bi Polar symptom also. And then there are other people who are depressed but not anxious, or who have Bi Polar Disorder, but no anxiety. It's a mixed bag!

I get a lot of anxiety and I notice it is stronger when I have been way down and I am on the way back up and also, when I get on the upside, because for me, the upside is usually mixed, rather than euphoric.

i just called the whole mess ABCD,, Acquired Brain Chemisty Disorder,, and dealt with it as a single issue, Imbalance... what i found it that the more balance i have in any part of my life, the more i have in all parts... i have been helped greatly by a relatively unknown therapeutic technology called CenterPointe auditory (sound) therapy. ( i have a post about it in the Alternative Therapies Forum, posted in early october.) coping skills are also extreemly important~!! i wish you the very best , and a swift recovery ~!

I have anxiety quite often, and it's especially bad when I'm off medication. So I would definitely say that anxiety could be a common symptom for bipolar. I think it's different for different people though. Some could have anxiety without being bipolar, and some can have bipolar without the anxiety. I personally have bipolar, as well as an anxiety disorder (OCD). So as sundog said, it's a mixed bag.

When I am manic I tend to have more anxiety. I am not sure if they are related, my pdoc explained why they are tied together but are seperate diagnosis.

And I have it more with depression... Probably not a part of BP per se (not listed among DSM criteria after all), but not at all unusual among those with BP.
