Hello.

I've never been in a relationship with a person with bipolar disorder before now. (I have a mental illness but not bipolar.)

When we met, he was manic and we fell in love. Now that he is not manic, I'm starting to feel like only his manic side loved me so he's not in love with me anymore.

Is this something that happens in the manic stage? Could you fall in love with someone and then come off the mania and realize you aren't in love?

Please I would definitely appreciate any insight!

I really love this person.

Thank you!!

hi
you certainly do things you wouldn't normally do when you are manic. and things feel sooooo different when you are manic - so things like love are really intense. You wont get the same intensity that there was during the mania in other mood states.
But was it "just" the mania???? I think that often what you feel in mania is an amplified version of what you normally feel - but not always, sometimes its just plain crazy, so it is possible either way.
Remember that after a mania often comes a depression so if that's the case it could be the depression talking - it is hard to love in depression.
You can't change what he is feeling, you can be as supportive as you can - you should also think about who you love, it is him in all mood states or just when he is manic?
Best wishes with your relationship.

It really depends on the episode and how deep it is. When I'm hypomanic I find it only intensifies my true feelings. I agree with Blackpup that when experiencing depression I don't love anyone including myself. It really sucks the life out of a person.

The book in my signature is written for spouses, partners etc. It's excellent.
