I've been trying to diet lately because of the forty lbs on I gained when I was first put on Seroquel and am finding it very difficult to lose weight even though I'm now dieting. I know that Seroquel makes you gain weight because you're always hungry on it (at least I was) but does it inhibit weight loss even if you're not overeating?
Anyone with experience on this would be greatly appreciated. __________________ LunarPariah If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried. |

I am on Seroquel, and I swear to you that I am the only one who didn't or doesn't gain weight from it.
I was told that Seroquel makes you hungrier, but it also slows your metabolism down so it is very difficult to lose weight even if you are dieting and exercising. __________________ When life keeps knocking you down again and again, get up, dust yourself off, give it the finger and continue on.

Diet alone won't do it with most psych meds. You have to exercise.

You have to do some cardio exercises, I exercise every day at 30-60 minutes doing kickboxing, boot camp, weight lifting. If you can't get to the gym order some dvds on Amazon and do them at home. You also have to reduce your calories but make sure you are getting all you nutrients. I am hungry a lot of the time to be honest.
But I am in shape and feel good, and take psych meds. So yes, it can be done, but it takes a greater commitment on your part than it takes for a person without psych meds. A good website(free) is Spark People.com. You put in what you eat, and it tells you how much fiber, protein, etc that you eat, and gives you a daily summary of your intake, and how many calories you ate. Good luck. |

Been on Seroquel for about almost a year and since then I went from 140lbs lean and cut to about 180lbs, muscles started disappearing behind the fat. I started eating larger portioned meals twice as much and lots of sweets. Now I been hitting the gym doing a lot of cardio, lifting weights, and trying to stay away from the sweets even though its hard. Now I'm down to 165lbs and seeing my V line once again!

Congrats dizzy.
I stopped weighing myself at 175, now I am down to 165 which is still too much for me, but it sure is great to see the lat obliques and triceps coming back from going to the gym! Does wonders for your self esteem. I also really have to monitor my portion size and go without what I really want. Usually it only takes about 2 weeks back at the gym when you've been slacking, but with the Lithium it has taken about 10 weeks, ugh. |

Ehhhhhh Seraquel I have a love hate relationship with it .. I gained 20 lbs on it in 5-6 weeks ,, yes i ate more than normal but i struggle with Anorexia so I wasnt stuffing my face which is an effect some people I know have taking it .
So my Pdoc , Therapist and I decided for me to stop it and try a new medication ( abilify ) the new med didnt help and I wasnt sleeping and for me sleep is the most important thing ,,if i dont sleep I get very " stupid" So .... I am back on it " for now " and just started Lamictal 25mg every day for 2 weeks then twice a day... I use to be a gym rat ... I worked out 5-6 days a week .. but in the past year i have had to deal with severe Fibromyalgia .. that finished my days of working out for a couple hours a day at the gym..im lucky if i can make it thru a 30 miin walk daily ,, some days my pain is too high to do that All my clothes are way too tight and im flipping out to be honest ,, I know i should just be glad to be more stable .. but bipolar with anorexia and all the other stress in mental health illness isnt a picnic either ! Wishing everyone some peace and weight loss hehehe |

I went from 210 to 194 when I started on Seroquel. My doctor said that of all those type of drugs this would be the least likely I would gain weight on.

I gained a lot of weight in a very short time. My mother said I looked "bloated". I feel awful. None of my clothing fit. Pdoc just switched me to Geodon. I told him I did not care that I was getting fat as long as I was feeling better (which I wasn't). He said he was more concerned with weight gain and potential health issues. I don't care anymore.
